Hi my PS2 makes a clicking noise when I turn it on and when I put any type of media in it. Any suggestions? Thanks. (It is the laser that is making the clicking noise.)

Is it a clicking? Or like a grinding type noise? If the laser is clicking [trying to focus], there's a cog in the dvd drive that may need to be adjusted. If it's a light grinding type clicking noise, your laser gear is dirty or worn. That's the white gear screwed on to the laser with 2 teeth on the bottom that ride the grooves of the snake motor.

Scratches? The scratches may be due to the laser being out of alignment.

If you click that, the green circled part is probably causing the clicking. The bottom of it may be worn out or just dirty. As far as the scratching of CDs, the laser height adjusting cog may be out of adjustment.

When you open it, depending on what version ps2 you have, you will either see the top of the drive on one side and the heatshield on the other or the top of the drive on one side and a power supply on the other. There are four screws on the top of the drive, if you open those you will see the tray. If you remove the two screws holding the tray in place, you can remove the tray and see the picture in the URL above,
