I can never get on the forums arount six o clock uk time.
I was just wondering whether there is going to be more servrers added to handle the increased traffic.

I'm not sure what time 6 oclock UK is compared to me (LA time), but I definately notice the forums becoming sluggish around 8 or 9 oclock pacific time. are the servers that run the forums the same that people download software from?

I think I read on here somewhere that the servers are getting overwhelmed and something about possible upgrades to them. Might want to check with one of the mods.

that sounds about right then. I don't know a whole lot of how these servers work, but you wouldn't think forums would use that much bandwidth. My bet is the software downloads are really killing the speed.

One of the admins mentioned that the servers were getting swamped at times. I'm on and off AD all day long and have encountered it more frequently in the last week or so.

I'll buy new servers and have them shipped to Finland but I'm going to need at least three folks to confirm it wasn't me that knocked off that bank next Tuesday at 10:30 AM.

Could someone please provide the link to where I can download tickets to the chee chee bar.
They are not for me of course, they are for my Jack Russel.
He would like to see topless chihuahua's.

We get HEAVY traffic around 1800 GMT - 2200 GMT. Our database server was using last night loads of 23.00 -- meaning in Windoze terms that its CPU usage was around 2300% as there were around 7,000 users simultaneously online..

We're planning for a server upgrade in January. We have now five servers -- two of them webservers, one database server, one download server and one running stuff like log analysis, etc.

We were planning to simply (well, relative term...) add two new boxes for the cluster -- one additional database box to act as a slave that would handle all the enormous queries (most notably forum searches) and one additional webserver. But our ISP informed us a while ago that the rack that currently hosts our 5 boxes doesn't have any space in it and we need to get our own rack and that it would mean that our IPs would change.

So, the plan is to get the own dedicated rack, get seven NEW servers (so we will also oomph up the other five boxes' specs), keep the existing five running at the same time, configure everything to the new cluster, switch the DNSs, let them run simultaneously for about a month and pay extra for hosting two clusters, as propagating DNS changes can take up to a month, so simply by switching to the new setup would mean that some users wouldn't be able to access aD at all until their ISPs update their DNSs.

But as you can imagine, this means s**tloads of work, we've post-poned it until January to start working on it, as we didn't want to spend our Christmas like we did last Christmas -- that is, by fixing bugs in a new setup.

Summary: We know the performance issue, we have a plan for it and we will start working on it sometime in January, but it will take most likely until February until "the stuff" is done. Meanwhile, we'll look into ways to improve the performance of the existing setup.

If there's anything I can do to help I will be more than willing.
I have three screwdrivers, a hammer and two spare IDE cables you can use.

agent-k: Thanks for the offer -- if you have one or two quad-Opteron servers with min of 4GB of memory just sitting there and you're wondering what to do with them, gimme a shout ;-)

No, my mate drD can keep them to save him buying any, as he is saving up for his new Porsche Cayenne.

It will look very nice parked outside his igloo.

We experienced enormous growth in traffic yesterday and this seems to be the case today as well, forum server had to be restarted few mins ago to get the box responding -- and its a Linux box...
