    hello.
before starting, let me say that i *did* read the rules to this thread and still found it necessary for me to post what i am about to post...

so. simply said, i want to copy a dvd onto a cd, but the excess/overload information out there on the web neatly confuses me!
every time i search for info on "how to-s", i am bombarded with hundreds of sites, each promoting *their* best software, yet each software seems to need *another* software, which needs *another* software, etc.... it's endless and quite frustrating!
i am looking to find someone who can enlighten me about ONE simple way to get my dvd onto a cd....
all this "rip-endoce-decode-convert-etc-etc" leads me in rotating circles until my head feels like it's about to explode.
i'm sorry if this question might have been asked a 1,000x before, but i'd be very grateful if someone listed me their simplified knowledge of the whole dvd-copying mystery!
    thanx in advance.............

From one newbie to another, I understand that the volume of information on this subject is staggering, and frequently confusing and contradictory. The best way to learn is to just do it. You'll make mistakes along the way, but that's part of learning.

I would share some newbie tips with you, but I'm confused by your wanting to copy a dvd "onto a [bold]cd[/bold]." Do you really mean to say "cd" here? If so, why?

thanx for the reply and sorry if the tech language i use is more or less incorrect or confusing, but yes i mean "onto a cd".. like the good ol' writeable cd's where one can add a compressed movie file onto it, except i realize that nowadays they're called "vcd"'s right?
anyway, i appreciate your feedback, i know that trying is the best way of learning, but believe me, it's not like it's not the hundreth times i try and try and try!
basically i get the part about ripping the film into my hard disk. that's easy enough.
the problem i have is converting the .vob file to an .avi file *without* having to go through all these "pseudo-files" or various softwares to download etc. none of which i understand.
i used main concept's mpeg encoder to shrink the file down directly from .vob, but it's quality was horrendous!
anyway, that's where i seem to bug. what's .avi, what's .mpg...? one is bigger than the other is all i understand. one fits onto a cd, the other doesn't. you see? i'm a bit lost in this hi-tek world.
    sorry to be a burden.

There are a few excellent guides on here that tell you step by step on how to make "vcd's" and "svcd's". They even tell you the software and where to find it. They're pretty user-friendly.
    http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/

You should know that trying to sqeeze even the smallest dvd's 4gb's down to 700mb's will degrade the quality noticably.

Any questions on terminology you have there are breif explinations in the glossary section on here as well:
    http://www.afterdawn.com/glossary/

And like Bazilla said, jump right in and give it a try cause after all, the fun is in the journey not the destination.
