Good day all, my first post and needing help.
This is odd, because it's a MediaGear external drive/card reader that I bought, but doesn't seem to be working properly. It says that I'm using an illegal disc each time I try to use a DVD-R and I can only play the first chunk of a ripped DVD when I burn with a DVD+R, the movie freezes and a disc error on the DVD player appears. I've already thrown out a couple DVD's now :( Any help out there would be greatly appreciated. Here's the Nero Log:

    first:

your version of Nero 6 is not the stablest version.... 6.6.0.18 is the most stablest version of Nero 6 and I would update it to that version. Here's how:

Before udating to 6.6.0.18 I would save the serial #, uninstall Nero, then use the cleaning tools : http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/eng/Clean_Tools.html
then do a registry clean up(free registry cleaner, CClean: http://www.ccleaner.com/download/downloadpage.aspx?1) and defrag...... then reboot!

    install package one:
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_nero_burning_rom/?539

    then install package two:
    http://www.nero.com/nero6/eng/Patch_for_NVE3.html
reboot and you're good to go!

also I would use better media. Stick with the MIJ rule (Made In Japan). Look for the MIJ on the label of the box of spindle (Taiyo Yuden, Sony, Maxell, and some Fuji)... the only exception to this rule is Verbatim, which is top notch media but made in Taiwan/Singapore and the only non MIJs I will use.

Nero doesn't like virtual drives..... turn it off!

this is a file from Roxio/Sonic or from WinAmp and it does cause havoc with Nero.... uninstall Roxio/Sonic or WinAmp.

your firmware is out of date (2.16).... udate your firmware here:
    http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1904 to 2.58

Firmware is programming that is inserted into a programmable memory area of your drive, thus becoming a permanent part of a drive. This 'software' is called firmware and can be updated with a firmware flasher. A firmware upgrade can add new functionality to your drive. Also bug fixes and improvements are done by firmware upgrades. It also adds more media codes and write strategies to the drive to improve burning capabilities and disk recognition.

RITEK media is supposed to be ok..... maybe because your firmware is not up to date you are getting:
illegal disc errors.... it doesn't like your disk! update firmware! and/or use better media MIJ!

burning too slow is just as bad as burning too fast! burn half the rated speed of the disk (if it's 8x burn at 4x, 16x burn at 8x).

try these changes and you'll have better results!

This is new media, I doubt that any firmware available for your older drive will not have a specific write stategy for it. Folks with older drives should just stick with Taiyo Yuden 8X -Rs.
