Definitely up date the firmware 1st - you're quite a few versions behind.
    The latest is B7W9.
    That may solve it.

If not what kind of problems are you having?

Ok that def. sounds like a firmware issue.
Update the firmware. One thing firmware does is help the drive recognize and have the proper write strategy for media.
If it doesn't have it - it will use a generic write pattern at a lower burn speed.

Give that a go and let us know.

Not a problem - glad that did the trick!

If you get burn failures at 16x - slow it down to 12x or 8x. Even though a disc may be rated for 16x doesn't mean that's the 'optimal' speed.

Is it only staying closed with one type of media or is it doing it for all even originals?

It may be the drive itself on it's way out. You can try uninstalling it in device manager rebooting and letting windows do it's thing and reinstall - may not help but can't hurt.
Right click on my computer>properties>hardware>device manager.
Right on the drive listed under dvd/cd rom drives then click uninstall.
    Reboot.

Drive doing anything else funky - like noisy or longer spin time?

I don't think the firmware update stops the drive from opening. It may just be a physical piece of the drive that gone - it's a bit older and eventually all things don't perform like they used to.

You can try flashing back to a previous version but depending on what media codes this firmware update had you might not be successful burning.
    Give it a shot.
The previous version was B7V9. You can get previous versions here
