I think there's a newer firmware version available for your burner, version 1.07:

    http://www.memorex.com/downloads/software/DVR106MR_FW107.EXE

The media you're using is fairly new and the burner you're using is fairly old, which is a recipe for problems unless the burner manufacturer keeps its firmware up to date. I don't believe they have for the most.

If updating the firmware doesn't help, try to find some 8X media and try that. The Sony D21 media is problematic for some newer burners as well.

I agree for an old burner with old firmware the new Sony might pose a problem. But that goes for most of the new media as well. I've used several spindles of the Sony media with different burners without a problem. I consider the Taiwanese Sony manufactured +R media as good as the Japanese Sony manufactured by Taiyo Yuden. I've used it with different burners and members here at AD have used it when solving problems with poor quality media. I gave my old Memorex burner to my son, so I haven't kept up with what it can use from the current offerings.

For whatever reason the drive isn't performing the end of disc. That can be firmware or it could be a drive starting to go bad. Update the firmware if possible. If that doesn't solve the problem, try swapping out the drive with a known good one and see if that solves the problem.

I didn't see this the first time:

You're burning at the very outer edge of the disk where it's more likely the disk goes out of spec because of the manner in which the disks are made. Set the traget output size to 4400mb in whatever authoring software you're using and see if that helps. In Nero Recode, it's the Fit to Target section in the lower right corner of the window. Select "Custom..." from the dropdown menu and then enter 4400 in the size box. In DVD Shrink, select "Preferences..." from the Edit menu, under the Preferences tab select "Custom" from the Target Output Size menu, and enter 4400 in the MB size box. If you're using a different program and can't find where to set the target size, post back.

I'd suspect Shrink is the transcoder since we're in the Shrink forum, but you never can be too sure. I've used the Sony media and have never needed to change default burn settings for content size. Any company can run a flawed batch of media. It's worth a try resetting the size smaller or even try a DVD from another brand such as Verbatim. But legless77 has already changed from 1 brand to the Sony over this problem. I have a feeling that the default content size isn't the problem here. But since it's an easy thing to eliminate, it would be an idea to go ahead and set the smaller size and do a simulated burn with Nero.

Anything that prevents the disc closing properly can be your problem. Nero has a multiple session option that can be a problem if not unchecked after use. Have you been doing any multiple session work recently? Sometimes old drives fade away slowly. If you have a DVD RW disc, try recording to it. DVD RW doesn't close the way R needs to. If it completes, that shows the problem is with finalizing a disc. I've also seen drives that would burn CDs successfully but no longer finish DVDs. Just as a test, try the CD and DVD RW burns to see how that works.

just passing thru, ..thread teleported to relevant forum.

    - the burners' firmware seems to recognise those discs ok...however..

...the burner is turning it's nose up at the disks..

..have a go at following the other guys' replies.

Try the media first if you haven't already. That's the easy check and a common problem. Always eliminate the easy things before going after the more difficult.

Have you tried the CD and/or DVD RW burn to see how your drive works with those? I'm curious on this one because I had to replace a Memorex that had similar problems not too long ago. The only thing it wouldn't do was finalize DVD R. But since it was used mainly for doing backups on DVD R, the owner needed a replacement.
