    @corleno -

    - update to 7.0.8.2 from here - http://www.nero.com/nero7/eng/nero7-up.php

a-ha, Nero's too old to recognise your burner, you need to update to 7.0.8.2

    - sufficient total memory but free memory leaves much to be desired. you need to ensure sufficient free memory prior to ALL burning

    - hmmm

    - your burner is still not supported in the very latest verson of Nero there...burner must be newer than the latest Nero update then so burner is only supported generically. maybe someone else can help out here and advise an alternative burning program...

Your using better media TY - that's a good thing.
Since it's -r turn this option off.
Another thing I've noticed is your drivers have gone from this
    To this
This may be part of the problem. I would try uninstalling the drive in device manager rebooting and letting windows reinstall.
Creaky would be the better one to help with this.
For burning an iso give dvd decrypter or imgburn a try.

    hi all.

i tried the suggestions given by binkie7 and creeky. thanks for the help!

    - updated nero with package 1 and package 2.
    - uninstalled roxio and ran roxio zapper.
    - ran firmware update for 203D (i do have a dell laptop) - altho my log seems to still indicate 202C.

however, i still get the same illegal disc error message. any additional help would be greatly appreciated! thank you!!!

Yep your firmware update didn't take for some reason. I would try downloading it again and retrying to flash the drive. Sometimes you will get a message saying to reboot which usually means it's sucessful.

The memory could still use some freeing up.

Burning at 2.4x is still a bit slow too.

Other than that it seems your drive doesn't like the Sony discs.
    You're still getting this error
    SCSI_TASTATUS_CHKCOND

Try switching to Verbatim or made in Japan Fuji or Maxell.
Let us know how it turns out - good, bad or otherwise!

the weird thing is that i have been using sony dvds exclusively for about a year. this is the first problem i have ever had. i did a quick recount of the discs in this spindle, and i have the full amount.

i guess it is possible that i got a bad spindle. does anyone know if there is any known change to how sony makes it's blank dvds?

i suppose i will give another brand, or at least another spindle a shot.

thanks again for your reply binkie!

i will definitely let you know how it works out.

You could have received a bad spindle or maybe some bad ones in the spindle. Though using better media usually cuts down on the errors.
I don't think there has been any change though they have been increasing the rated burn speeds on their discs.
So maybe you were using 8x or lower and now these rated 16x speeds are not liked by your burner.
That's where the firmware may help.
    Keep us posted!

    thanks for the reply binkie7.

just so i understand this burning speed issue...

if a dvd is rated as a 16x speed, you should not burn any slower?

when i put the dvd in the drive, nero gives me burning speed options of 1, 2, 2.4x, and Maximum.

i (perhaps mistakenly) thought that the slower i burned a dvd, the less chance for error. i also close all other applications when burning.

You can burn 16x media slower than 16x - for 16x quality media with a good drive that supports this speed I burn at 8x or 12x.
Now since the max burn speed on your drive is 8x for -/+ is I would try 4x.
Why Nero only list those burns when a blank is inserted before the project starts is usually due to the what the drive recognizes as the discs burn speeds. This is where a firmware update can help.
Since your's is 8x hopefully NEC has come out w/ firmware updates for 16x media. Though sometimes the updates are not very descriptive on what they're adding.
As the drives get better and faster along with the media - try the higher speeds out. For yours 4x should be okay. It really depends on what works best for you & your setup.

thanks for the info, binkie7. i'm learning a lot even though i still feel completely lost. lol.

so i tried running the firmware update again. then tried burning. same illegal error, and the log still indicates 202c firmware, not 203D.

maybe i am not updating the firmware correctly. i downloaded a zip file and unzipped the files:
    6500FAST.BIN
    6500ORIG.BIN
    6500RPC1.BIN
    NEC6X00A.EXE
    README.TXT

i ran the .exe which flashes a DOS window so quickly i can't see what is actually happening there. i have no idea what most of the text in the README.TXT file means. here's what it says...

NEC ND-6500A 203D RPC1 and Rip Speed Firmware
    Included files
    README.TXT This file
    NEC6X00A.EXE ND-6x00A series DOS Flasher
    6500ORIG.BIN Original binary as supplied
6500FAST.BIN 6100@6500 and Rip Lock Patches
    6500RPC1.BIN RPC1, 6100@6500 and Rip Lock Patches
6100@6500 allows the firmware to work on a 6100A drive if you have one.
Rip Lock removes the speed locks on single and dual layer DVD-ROM discs
    with a VIDEO_TS directory.
RPC1 removes region state handling commands and checks.
    --------------------------
An RPC1 firmware defeats the internal counters within the drive and
removes region enforcement. This only is HALF of the equation. You
need to use DVD Genie or similar software to control your player
    software. http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?t=239
Flashing these firmwares requires some risk on your part. If you are not
comfortable with this please do not proceed. We cannot guarantee they will
work or flash correctly in any environment out of our control.
The flash process requires Real DOS, a DOS box under Windows is not suitable.
The syntax for the flasher, assuming a Secondary Master is
    nec6x00a -sec -mas -flash 6500xxxx.BIN
Make a backup of your current ROM first
    nec6x00a -sec -mas -out BACKUP.BIN

any more info you can help me with would be very appreciated! is there more i should be doing to update the firmware?

this is great place for info, and it has really helped so far! hopefully, i'll be able to burn again soon!

thanks again for all the help and info!

    @BoxofEyes
Well the readme.txt isn't helping me either:) Looks like this drive had riplock and this removes it. Basically riplock slowed the reading/ripping to a crawl from what I've read.
I'm at a loss on why the firmware is not taking after a reboot. It sounds like you did everything correct - it's very fast to flash.
Maybe Creaky will pop back in and can help with this.
I think your best shot may be trying different media - 8x rated(no higher) Sony's, Verbatim or made in Japan Fuji. If you're in the US Best Buy has Sony's - 50 for 14.99.
Oh and your not lost - you'e been a able to a dvd before so you are far from lost! Hopefully you'll be back in business soon!

Here's something to check - check the cable from the drive to the mobo - make sure secure. You may even want to unplug each end and plug back in. May not help but another possibility to rule out.

thanks for the reply, yet again, binkie7!

yeah, i will try another media. i was able to return the previous spindle of sonys, and got another before posting that last post -- of course i now see that they were 16x too.

14.99 for 50 sonys at best buy? wow. i just paid 23+ at (blush) wal-mart tonight -- quite honestly, it is simply because it is close by. i think there may be a best buy about 20 miles away. i'll check into it.

maybe someone else (creeky?) can chime in on the firmware update, but in the meantime i will check into the other media.

thanks again for all your help!

Not a problem! Check the cables and try the new discs. You can always return them if the same things happens.
    Let's see how that goes.
