    Hi puffeye
    Here's some suggestions:
    Recorder: <_NEC DVD+-RW ND-6500A> Version: 202C
Update the firmware on the drive to 203E.
Can usually be the cause of the illegal disc error - media not supported by the firmware so updating may just do the trick.

    Nero version: 6.3.1.13
Nero can use an update - the latest for 6 is 6.6.1.15a - update package 1 and 2 only from here - link

    File 'Drivers\CDRALW2K.SYS'
Roxio and Nero don't always play well so if the above fails uninstall Roxio and run the zap tool

Give that a go and let us know.

    Binkie

Thanks for taking the time to answer my request for help. I did as suggested and updated the firmware and Nero with no success. The burn process continues to fail. The latest log (after updates) is below. Roxio is not on my system. Any other thoughts greatly appreciated!

    Dang :(
Ok still getting the illegal disc error.
So looks like the firmware may not have the media id for these Sony's.
No always a bad thing - the drive will use a generic write strategy.
Sometimes it works. Unfortunately in your case it's not.

The burn speed is 2.4x - is this the highest or only option the burner will give on these? If it is than def. looking like no support from the firmware.

Try different media like Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim or made in Japan Fuji or Maxell. If you can get 8x media that would probably be best.

The Roxio driver is used by a few other programs just not totally sure which ones. Roxio also has software like SonicDVD.

More memory in use in this log - 84%.
So no multitasking and close any unneeded programs.

Thanks - I'll try new media. I am burning a disk right now at 16x on my other computer using the same media and Nero (not updated). That burner is also a NEC (3520a). My hope is to get this 6500a working again. I appreciate the help.

Different media will hopefully do the trick.

The 16x burners made by good manufacturers like NEC seem to do much better with a variety of media compared to their slimline drive counterparts in laptops. Laptop drive tend (at least in my experience) tend to be a little pickier w/ media.

    Keep us posted

This problem is driving me nuts!! I've tried updating software and firmware, different media and even a new drive (NEC6500a)...same issue. And why is it attempting a burn at only 2.4X? I am not savvy enough to figure this out by myself, but I'm guessing it's something really simple; like a setting I inadvertently changed or a radio button that needs to be (de)selected. Or could it be something deeper, a registry glitch maybe? I might also try uninstalling and reinstalling the drive through device manager. Thoughts?? Anybody??

    Many thanks - puff

Uninstalling in device manager can't hurt so give it a try.

Have you tried any 8x media? The 2.4x max burn usually means that the drives doesn't fully recognize the media - it's the default speed it will use.

Dell sent you a new drive? Check their site for any updates for this laptop.

Try another burning program and see how that makes out. Here's a good free one - ImgBurn.
use the build mode to add the video_ts folder.

Are the 2 that you tried 16x media?

ImgBurn lets you set a higher burn speed but one thing this log is missing is the supported burn speeds of the disc. So this can still lead to these disc not being fully recognized by the drive.

    Did Dell replace the drive?

The media is rated for "up to 16x". I set the rate at 8x in ImgBrn. The new burner was purchased by me. The laptop is too old for Dell to care. With this ongoing problem, which is why I purchased the replacement drive in the first place, I suspect the original drive is just fine and something else needs tweaking. Thanks again for your continuing interest/help.

    Bad ide cable maybe?
Not ideal but you could try hooking it up to the primary ide on the slave connector. Dell usually has the jumper pins set to cable select on pc's - not sure on laptops or if there would be 2 connectors on the ide cable - not a lot of room in them :)

Another thing you may want to consider is exchanging this drive for an external. If the old one can read discs I'd put that one back in and use an external to burn.

CONSIDER, if you have installed any new burning software when this started or security software it maybe interfearing, probably not, i didn't read all of this so if its all ready been said don't beat over the head with a stick for it, but try reinstalling the drivers or updating them, try to go back to a restore point, there is grease that lubrcates the tray and allows it open when you opened it grease might have spat out and hit the reader or some lense of some importance so try opening it up. or .... it might just be the end of your drive -OH NO

Both drives (original and replacement) are able to read DVDs; burning is the problem. This fact may either help diagnose the problem or make it even more confounding. Thanks again.

I'm running nero 6, which has been updated. Drivers/firmware for the drive are also the latest. I've also tried burning with ImgBurn; same problem.

i see, know ........... okay the only thing i have left that could solve this is that your SATA cords, which are the data transfer cables from your motherboard to drives must be dead, try replacing them, maybe there is a dust build up in them? there very cheap and if this doen't solve it i don't know what will
