    Hello,
I burn a couple dvd last week and i'm trying to save a copy of my work, but now it gives me a power calibration error and cannot burn all at once error.

Is my dvd burner broke or something, it is used for only a year

    Hi sammwon
1st -edit out the serial # at the top of the log - begins w/ 1C.
Don't need someone else using it.

    Nero API version: 7.2.0.3
Nero can use an update - the latest is 7.7.5.1.

    Recorder: <MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-840S>Version: 1.00
Not the greatest drives imho -but may need a firmware update. The burner fully recognizes the media your using which is one of the main things firmware does. But good to keep it up to date.
Here's a link for firmware update on Sony, Packard Bell laptops w/ this drive.
    link

    Disc Manufacturer ID: CMC MAG,
May be the biggest reason for your burn error. Not the best.
Better to use would be Verbatim or made in Japan Sony, Fuji or Maxell.

For these discs I'd take it down to 6x or 4x too.

Give that a go and let us know.

For the Sony laptop download 1.04 that would be the latest one.

Sounds like it isn't - that's why you received that message. Isn't that a Toshiba?
There might not be a firmware up date for you burner. Depends on the laptop manufacturer. You could check Toshiba's site.

I'd still switch the media - that just may be the main cause of your power calibration error. It's one of the 1st things to rule out.
You can also try burning them at a lower speed too.

Discs can sometimes vary in the same spindle (had it happen to me before) and media is the easiest to rule out to make sure that's not the cause.

Here's a few other things that can cause a power calibration error (from Nero). Since this is a laptop a little harder when it comes to checking the power connections & switching cables.

    9. I get a 'Power calibration error' or 'Calibration area (almost) full' error message. Why?

Power Calibration is controlled by the recorder.

Before any write operation, all recorders must do a 15 step power test to determine the optimum power for writing to the CD; this is called "Optimum Power Calibration"(OPC). During the write, it continues to do this test to get the best write throughout the whole CD; this is called "Running Optimum Power Calibration" (ROPC).
This whole process is controlled by the recorder, though initiated by programs such as Nero. There is an area on the inner part of the CD for the test and test data info to be stored. You can use this area up to 999 times.

If you receive the "Power calibration error" or "Power calibration area is (amost) full" error message, the cause will be either poor media, poor power, or a defective recorder.

    Please try the following solutions:

    * Update the firmware of your recorder. Please check the manufacturer's website for the latest version.
    * Try another brand of CD-R or CD-RW media.
    * Try different power connectors, and for recorders, do not share power with other devices. It needs its own power connector. If the error occurs with an external recorder, the power source in the chassis could be the cause. As a test, try to take the recorder out of the external chassis and connect it internal.
    * Try different configurations, such as taking the CD-ROM to the primary IDE bus as slave and have only the recorder connected to the secondary IDE bus as master.
    * Send the recorder in for service.

Ok - it's my understanding that a different laser is used for cd's then dvd's with the burner. Both are made differently so even though you can burn cd's doesn't always mean the dvd's will work too.
Usually it's the dvd burning that goes 1st - not always though.

I have the UJ-840D - a little different model then yours - and I'm not thrilled w/ it but it's still under warranty. Laptop burners don't hold up as well as their pc counterparts imho.

I'd still give the other media a shot.

Now you getting a few of these errors: Error on LockVolume: Access is denied.

So Nero isn't getting exclusive access to the drive.

    Close any programs running.

Another thing you might want try is uninstall the ide channel this drive is on (secondary) reboot and let windows do it's think and reinstall.
    Cant hurt.
Right click on 'my computer' > properties>hardware>device manager>ide ata/atapi controllers. Right click on the secondary one and click uninstall.

Check this too - Go to control panel>administrative tools>services.
Look for IMAPI CD-Burning. Under start up type - manual or disabled should be listed. If it's set to automatic can sometimes interfere.

Might want to try another burning program too - you can try ImgBurn which is a good free one.
For burning video files, data use the build mode.

Yes I will be around tomorrow night. Getting late here too.

If it's set to automatic right click on it and go to properties and in the drop down change to manual. Disable should work too. Mine are set to manual with the service stopped.

Hopefully one of these may do the trick.

    Hmmm check the IMAPI thing?

I'm off for the night in a few. But let me see what I can dig up on this drive at work tomorrow.
What's the model of Qosmio laptop?

Ok go here and see if there is a firmware update:
    http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_drivers_bios.jsp?service=UK

You'll need to choice a few things like product (notebook), family (series of the Qosmio you have) and driver type. See if firmware is listed in the drop down. If it's not then none is available.

Are you update on any updates Toshiba has put out for this notebook?
    Might help.

You can try cleaning the lens. Just gently use a damp q tip w/ rubbing alcohol. You'll see the lens when you open the drive. Just be careful and don't get anything wet - not much protection on the lens or around it.
