This problem just started for me.

I wanted to make a dvd with Nero Vision Express on Nero Express 6 supplied with my Benq burner.

When I want to add an avi the seek takes forever. I thought it
wasn't looking up files at all and made repeated restarts including
    soft boot.

After opening a couple other windows then returning to NVE,
there was the directory load. But this was maybe 5 minutes later.

Are there any cures for this besides reinstalling the program?

How much RAM does your PC have? Can you tell us how much RAM/system process % is being used when running Nero Vision Express?

Have you had any other Nero software installed previously? Do you have any instaleld now?

    The system is:

    MachSpeed X-Caliber motherboard
    Celeron D 2.93G cpu
    512k mem
    Benq 1620 dvdrw

The Nero Vision Express is bundled with the Newro Express suite
that comes with the Benq burner so all that stuff from Nero is on
there and I use it regularly.

This slowdown thing just seems odd to me-- nothing is online, no
other programs active. It was going slightly better today but is still a hassle.

Would running Nero Cleaner and reinstall get some of the pokiness
out of the Nero Vision Express program?

I use the Nero Express program recommended here which is a custom job and more stable. It is not the newest version and performs well for most jobs.

    Yes, most likely.
    1)Save your serial number
    2) Run this tool to uninstall Nero.
    3) Run this tool to remove all the Nero Vision Express stuff from your PC.
    4) Lastly, run this tool to clean your PC of all Nero registry entries and drivers.

Now that you have wiped Nero from your PC, before unistalling it may be wise to run a Registry Cleaner, such as CCleaner (google it) and then a HDD defragmenter such as O&O Defrag 10 (google it - not free, but trial will do - well worth buying FYI).

Once you've done that properly, reinstall Nero with your serial number which you saved at the start!

    See how you get on.

I just did all the procedures after a full disk backup.

    These tips were very good.

I still do a bit of big toe tapping in Nero VE but not nearly
    as bad as before.

The defrag tool is good but it doesn't show a lot of what it's
doing in a progress bar so I twiddled while that got done.

    Thanks for the advice.

I should be able to go into Windows 2000 defrag and see everything
    lined up.
