I have just started getting into the ps1 and ps2 backup world and cant seem to figure out which chip i need.
I need one that will allow me to play my own backed up discs, I am not bothered about import games and i do not mind soldering.
My ps2's make is SCPH-50003 and my serial starts with FB. it is one of the new Satin Silver ones

I have a Magic V, and it's been great. It's usually hailed as being the best on the market at the moment, and its price is very decent. It does take a lot of soldering compared to the others; I know you said you don't mind soldering, but keep in mind this is extremely delicate stuff. Make sure you have some high quality soldering equipment if you attempt it.
