From what I understand use the jailbreak USB stick to delay direct boot of the backup Blu-ray disc. Is this correct? Does the jailbreak USB device still work on all PS3 models?
Once you have the image of the PS3 game you have to burn it to any special type of media or use any special type of DVD writer?
I know these are very basic questions but, I've got a great deal on a used PS3 and I have to make my decision very quickly so I wanted to make sure I got my information as quickly and accurately as possible.
    Thanks.

you dont need the usb stick to play backups, and you dont burn the games to play them, you instal the game to you HD and play it from that. You can only modify the PS3 if its on FW3.55 however you can also downgrade to 3.55. Look at the top of PS3 - Modding & Hacking forum and there is a tutorial on it.

thanks for the tip. but now I have 3 more questions.

    1. How do you connect the PS3 to the computer to run that dash program that is needed to make sure you have the proper firmware?

    2. How do you load the modified firmware onto the PS3?

3.I have been reading some forum post I think a few times I have read something about new games not working with the modified firmware. Is this correct?

if you read my first reply you would see that i said "look" at the tutorial on the top of the PS3 forum page THIS FORUM! there is a simple guide that a 2 year old can follow. YOU DONT CONNECT THE PS3 to your PC, you load the CFW on a usb stick and plug it into you PS3...follow the guide

thanks for the reply. I guess you should not really read through stuff like that when you're tired.

Is there any truth to what I have read about newer games not working with the firmware?

ya its true! At the moment newer games will not work with CFW, its been alost 2 months since a new game has been able to work on the PS3, but the word around is that soon there will be a fix for this, could be just a rumor but who knows...If you dont mind playing older games, well not really that old just games that were released 2 months ago and beyond, than have at. I'm still enjoying playing KillZone

Thanks for the quick reply. Does anyone have any idea how old the PlayStation's are that have the proper firmware? Basically how old of the PlayStation do I have to buy to be sure to get one with the proper firmware?

My Xbox is unable to update the dashboard. I was just about to get back into playing it? (Previously I had really only played it for a day or two)
now I am unable to flash it with the latest firmware. So I'm trying to figure out where I want to go from here.

It would be ideal to get a PS3 that has 3.55Fw or lower on it,but your only get get that if its used, however if the FW is higher than 3.55 you can downgrade to 3.55. Newer consoles will have the fw 3.72

Used consoles with 3.55 and lower tend to be cheaper than new models with 3.72. There have been some reports that downgrading does not work on some of the newer models either...so if you want to jailbreak, used is the way to go.

thanks for the info everybody. How old are the system should I be looking for? I figured that if I buy one off of craigslist or eBay I can communicate with the seller to find out how old the system is.

It's not about how old the system is, the people who bough the launch consoles when the PS3 was first released was on firmware 1.xx or whatever.

Obviously they have had to update the firmware as new firmware was released; so you can buy a launch console and it coul dhave 3.72 on it if the previous owner installed it.

Of course you could also look for bundle packages that are know to have older firmware on them. Technically a new console as it is unused, but have lower fw.

So as stated above, if you buy a 2nd hand console, ask the seller what firmware is on the console. If it's 3.55 or below you're good to go, if its 3.6x or above you will need to buy one of the downgraders and downgrade.

I have not done much NextGen gaming, so the answer to this question may be obvious and I just do not know.
Some PS3 games have firmware updates on them, do you have to do these updates in order to play the games. Or is there some way around this?

And also, I'm looking at buying a used PlayStation. I did some research on Google and found that there is an easy way to check what firmware is on the system. But now I do not remember how to do this and I cannot find the same page again. Can someone tell me how you check to see what firmware version is on the system?

I guess my question would've been better stated as, is this something the average seller would know about their system? If they don't know how can I direct them to find out?
