I've just followed the guide on this site to convert the following "anchorman.dvdrip.xvid-deity AVI File 716,462 KB" to mpeg to burn to dvd.I noticed that when i put the cursor over the file it reads as 699mb? and AVIcodec readings are
    File : 699 MB (699 MB), duration: 1:37:25, type: AVI, 1 audio stream(s), quality: 45 %
    Video : 610 MB, 875 Kbps, 23.976 fps, 576*304 (16:9), XVID = XVID Mpeg-4, Supported
    Audio : 89 MB, 128 Kbps, 48000 Hz, 2 channels, 0x55 = MPEG Layer-3, Supported
but when you have to reduce the size to 97% of the dvd I can only get it down to 170.50% and it says at the top that the file is 290 mins long??
Any help would be much appreciated

The file has VBR MP3 audio, and this causes the encoder to choke. It tries to make sense of VBR as CBR and comes up with 290 minutes (or some other outrageous number).
Do a search on how to do audio separately using virtualdub(mod).
