Opening an ISO file

    I don't know anything about ISO files, but have read that they are basically a file that is an image of a cd. So how do I translate this file into another type that I can use? I don't have a cd-r/rw and wondered if there is some application that will allow me to extract or change the file. Is this possible? Is there anything I can do?
