I have a XVid Mpeg-4 video file. during playback after 28 minutes the picture crashes but you can still here the audio playing along nicely. Does anyone know how to rectify this problem. I have to stop the file and then play it again from 30 minutes in. As you can imagine this is very tiresome. tahnks for the help (if i get any!!)

all divfix does is make it even worse. it kind of scrambles it all, the time jumps forward about 10 minutes and then just doesn't play after that. Is there a differnt programme that can fix this problem?

You could scan it for errors with virtualdub or one of it's mods and see whether it is able to fix the problem.

Open the video file to virtualdub and from the menu choose video -> scan video stream for errors...
