I use the Zune software on my PC instead of WMP11 to stream mp3's to my 360, mainly because WMP11 always gives me trouble with updating my library of songs. Anyway everything works great as far as the streaming is concerned (other than it doesn't have gapless playback) except the 360 doesnt correctly read the disc number tags in the files! So if i have a multidisc album it plays all the track 1's first then the track 2's, etc.

I have about 35000 songs and i have them just the way i like them (i.e 'The Wall' is one album with a disc 1 and a disc 2 set with the id3 disc# tag as opposed to having 2 separate albums 'The Wall Disc 1' and 'The Wall Disc 2') and im not about to go back and change track#'s either. Ive given up on Microsoft ever adding support for this, does anyone have any insight into potentially adding support for this via modification of the Zune Software System Files? Or is it how the Xbox 360 interprets that data and in order to add this feature it would have to be console side? I know nothing about programming and was hoping someone could give me some insight!

whats the reason for streaming is the 360 elsewhere in the house ? if not what is being used as speaker output does it mean there is no stereo available ?

why are the mp3's not being played directly off the 360's own storage it does support mp3 or does it have the same issue your experiencing with the pc

have you checked the 360's player options is there anything there that lets it play on a first served basis check zune's stream settings as well

perhaps another player is required most stream these days including xbmc

Thanks for the reply scorpNZ, to answer a few of your questions:
    1. The reason i use streaming is because my laptop is upstairs on the second floor connected to its monitor and a pair of decent but ultimately cheap computer speakers. The Xbox 360 is downstairs hooked up to the main TV in the house as well as a receiver with much nicer stereo speakers, naturally music sounds better from this and i like the idea of being able to listen to the same library of music both up and downstairs without having to buy any additional equipment, hence the media streaming.

    2. The mp3's are not being played off the 360s storage device because i have too many (roughly about 260gb of music) :) Also i update my music library regularly so having to copy new songs from my computer to the 360 would just be a huge hassle! It would also seem like a waste of space having duplicate songs to me when streaming actually works fine as i've said with the Zune software. It just doesnt organize the files correctly :p

    3. No options in either the 360 or Zune software settings to fix the issue :(

I've also tried hooking my iPod up to the 360 via USB and it has the same problem, doesnt read the disc # tag so The Beatles White Album would show up with this track order: Back in the U.S.S.R., Birthday, Dear Prudence, Yer Blues, Glass Onion, Mother Nature's Son, etc.

The only "solution" ive found has been from the Zune software to make a playlist containing the correct track list and that works, but having to do that for every multidisc album i have kind of negates the purpose of being able to search by album and artist on the console, and i would have a TON of playlists to wade through lol

So I decided to give XBMC a shot, and while it has its own set of problems im experiencing (http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=175598), i can confirm it is showing the Albums track list in the correct order! So thats a good thing :)

Yeah it must be a bloody limitation of the 360 useless microsoft shaft us once again..lol..

vlc can stream as can klite i think so two more players to look at

Ok so muck about with xbmc for a bit, checkout the wiki on how to set it up with thumbs or cover views which can be downloaded from within xbmc for all the albums you have because if it still isn't working the way you want & no other player does the job i'm going to send you down another track which will be like "back to the future" :p ok i'll give a hint to my train of thought go to youtube look for vids of xbmc on the original xbox if you can't get the 360 setup the original xbox is a good alternative & i should know i have 4 of em :p
