OK, so I am a newbie here and to the 360 world however not afraid to get my hands dirty and get delving in there but of course any initial help is always welcome. Thanks.

    Xenon
    Benq 64930c
    Dash : 2.0.8498.0

History of Xbox360 unknown, obtained with the knowledge that it was faulty, but fault/symptoms unknown, untested as it came with no leads or controller.
Obvious signs of prior disassembly, casing all mangled.
Benq drive has obvious signs of re-soldering to the PCB wires. Whats the chances this is the original PCB with key in tact and orig FW.

Powered up the console and all is fine.
    Plays a DVD and CD's.
Try playing a shop game and it tries playing it as a DVD, 'Play DVD' and 'To play this disc put it in an xbox 360 console' splash screen appears.

The game is GTA IV Live, the only game I have to my collection but believed to be fine, shall source more games to try out.

How do I determine if the Benq FW is orig or hacked, is this a job for JF?
My understanding is that once a Benq has been hacked the key is no longer retrievable from the drive, you need to have the original saved file or access it from the motherboard but this is at greater expense, not worth the cost for a one off fix.

Is a faulty laser a possibility? Though it reads dvd's and cd's - pot cal, perhaps.
Is a faulty drive belt/motor possible, not spinning up fast enough to read the game disc?

Any advice for the way forward with this please.

You normally can always retrieve the key from a BenQ, if it is still there, hacked or not. Your problem is that there seems to be a missmatch between the drive's key and the motherboard's key, somebody tried to simply switch a faulty drive with a good drive from a RROD Xbox 360 would be my guess, or somebody fucked up when trying to hack the drive and wrote a keyless firmware to it. There is only one thing you can do now to get this box up and running again: Get all the stuff needed for RGH. I wouldn't recommend that though, the parts needed cost more than a used Xbox 360. Also especially with a box with an unknown history, it could be a repaired RROD console that fails again in a few days.
With a faulty laser you would get a disc unreadable error, not play as DVD. The disc gets read, security measures just prevent it from getting recognized as a game.

Advice for the way to forward this: Keep the box for spares, as the drive seems to be good or make an 0800 ripping drive out of it and get a working Xbox 360 without cables off ebay.

Yeah, just my luck. Oh well no chance of recovery. But not all bad? Surely not.
I have no interest in playing 'Live' so how about hacking so I can play games from a harddrive/pendrive etc..?
Please ignore my ignorance if this is not an option.
    Thanks for your reply.

You'd need to RGH for that too, but as I said, with a console with an unknown history I wouldn't put that much money into the hardware. Could be a RROD which can go bad in a month or so.

You most likely got a xbox that was put together from more than one unit. A dvd drive without a matching key will give play dvd. Ebay is known for this.

Ok, so just out of curiosity sake what is the cheapest way of reading the DVD Key from the Benq drive.
Ok so it might be all 0's F's or 7's but just for the hell of it.

PMT Hack me finks, just need a couple of wires, switch, probe(pin/needle) with JF.

This would also show whether its OFW or CFW.

PMT is not a method of grabbing keys. You can do the Reset glitch and install xell to get the key. This will require a coolrunner which is about $20 and soldering skills. I would just buy a new box.

PMT is of course a method of grabbing keys off a working Lite-On drive (actually, in my oppinion the easiest way, all you need is a needle, a switch and a wire and about 5 minutes time). For BenQ you don't need any special hardware, just connect it and use Jungleflasher.

Do you mean just connect benq direct to pc via sata cable (hopefully I have the correct sata controller/hardware on my pc) and read directly from drive using JF. Or do I still need the PMT hack? If so where do I probe on the benq?
I shall be using the xbox, with video cable removed, to power the benq. I am not worried about the x360 being flagged.

Thanks, why in your opinion should I buy a new box?
Is this due to costs or lack of experience related?
Experience comes from making mistakes and I have made a few of those in the past, but always learn from them, well sometimes always.
And as for cost, well keeping things cheap is always a bonus but not always possible.

You don't have to PMT on a BenQ, just follow the Jungleflasher tutorial, to get the key. You might even get a key with your drive, if the old owner simply placed a drive from another Xbox 360 into your box. I would buy another box too, all that hassle on a box with an unknown history that could die any minute. The coolrunner isn't the only thing you need, you also need the nand programmer, which is around 30 to 40 US$ too.
Also you don't know if the original drive of this box was a BenQ or if it was a different brand.

Correct but PMT is not a method to grab keys that do not match as in this case.

Wrong. He would need a cool runner and a Programmer to glitch.

Don't you get it? There is no key to grab. The key on his drive doesn't match the CPU key. rGE or buy a new box. It is not worth it because after you buy a programmer and cool runner you are almost the price of a new console

    Easy Tiger,
I (as the others) understand that the key is either missing or the wrong key but I would still like to handshake the drive to see out of curiosity what the key reads, whether it be completely the wrong key or just reads all 0's,7's or F's.
I appreciate the point you and others have made regarding cost, I was of that opinion right from the start, for just one console. However, I am not a keen gamer so have little interest in actually getting it running to play games nor for financial gain but more to just get it working again for satisfaction if you like. Ok, I could pay someone to do it but that is not in my nature.
Thankyou for your advice, it is appreciated.

You will need a nandprogrammer and a coolrun or some kind of RGE chip to get the cpu key. Just a big waste of time and money but yes you can do it.
