    Hey everybody,
I'm not sure if you guys will be able to help at all, but my remote for the DVD player isn't working. I've tried replacing the batteries about a million times, but no effect. The DVD player itself chugs along just fine until it reaches the menu, at which point I can't do anything. Anyone have any suggestions?

    Hello guzee42,

Have you tried to reinstall video software? Philips has updates for various players, but 642 is probably considered an old one and the update is not posted there any more.

You could also ask Philips if you have Philips DVD player.

I got a bunch of shows that had qpel in them that wouldn't play on my 642. I found AVI Recomp and used that to remove qpel (I didn't have to do anything in the software just let it recode with default settings).

    Here's the link

It let me batch convert the files (incidentally, you have to add a file to the queue to get a start button - a little strange) and did a good job. The files play now.
