A DivX file uses MPEG-4 compression

If the player is DivX compatible and the file is a DivX file, yes the file can be written to a DVD data disk.

The player may stipulate a requirement that the resolution of the DivX file not exceed 720x576.

If subtitles are available in .srt format (they must have the same
name as the video file, example 'myfile.avi 'myfile.srt) then you can also include them on the disk and use the remote to display them.

XviD files (generally) will also play back in the DivX player.

Search for DivX compatible players, here.

I've read somewhere that a lot of Divx players will only play Divx on CD media. You'd do well to check the brand's spec page before purchasing.
