Playing back-ups direct from HDD

Is there a way that backed up games can be played directly from HDD? I have the NME 1.2 chip, and I am thinking that by putting my backups on XSATA, there may be a way to play them without burning them. or perhaps connecting the console to my PC via the SATA-to-USB cable might also be an option. User interface software would be required in either case - has any heard of anything like it?

No, unfortunately you can not play any game from the hard drive unless you bought and downloaded it from Xbox Live Marketplace. Those are stored and played from your hard drive. Hopefully in the future they can add some functions to the 360 to be able to do this, and hopefully FTP as well.
