I have gone through a couple of websites to find out that i have a version 4 ps2. I just bought a sony laptop and started burning dvds on DVD+Rs. I tried playing them in my ps2 and it won't even load. This is an unmodded ps2. Can anyone help me with this? Do i need to buy a mod chip or what??

You need some kind of mod to play PS2 backups.
For dvd movies you dont need a mod.
Are you trying to play dvd movies?

I would buy a flip top. Much easier than and less hassle than a mod chip.

Ive heard that dvd+r's dont work so well on v1-4 ps2's but hopefully youre machine is one of the exceptions. Also:

I dont understand how a flip top (ie. swapping and loading disks etc) is easier than a mod chop (put backup in and play). How does that make any sense whatsoever?
