I know that microsoft has had some history with mod prevention starting with the original xbox which modders outsmarted them with by installing a switch to turn off mod chip on xbox live, but does sony have a similar history of mod prevention?

lol yes. If your trying to play a game online with a modchip (like playing imports or backups with swap magic or a modchip of any kind) it'll will use DNAS, Sony's online security service. Which ''investigates'' your PS2 and sees if you've booted it with a modchip or something of any kind. If it sees that, it'll block you from online play. But you can always patch the game or turn off the modchip.

Yea. PS2 didnt have a acually serial number that they block like the Xbox did. But not too sure whats going on with the PS3...Btw 360 has started blocking modded 360 during the day of the halo 3 beta launch.
