    Hi
When I try to burn dvd using Nero 7 ultra, I am getting this message I have never had a problem with before.

    WAITING FOR DISC
PLEASE INSERT AN EMPTY DISC TO WRITE ON

the disc is empty but when I try to burn my burner ejects the empty disc and I get this message.

I ran the dvd using ripit4me, dvd decrypter and dvd shrink, no problems there that I am aware of.

I hope it is something simple I'm missing here
    thanks for your help

    Hey Soup,

Can you post a burn log and let us know what type of media you are using. If it is a RW it needs to be formatted, but usually my nero does that for me, but I use 6 not 7. Is this a new type of media or have you always used them? Sounds like you encrypted and transcoded ok.

    thanks
I am using the same media type I've been using for a while.
I have been doing some work on an old computer which I hooked my burner to, but I didn't mess with any of the settings for my burner.
How do I post a burn log?

    Hey soupnazi
Post back the media that you're using too like kitty66 suggested. Like Sony +R 16x
May not show in the log if it's asking to insert a DVD - it's not being recognized by the burner.

You can find your log here:
    program files>nero>nero 7>core>nerohistory.

It will be a text file - just need the last one. Usually separated by something like this:
    ========*** Nero Burning History***=========

Be sure to edit out the serial # too - begins w/ 1A,1C or 5C.

    Hey Blink and Soup

@Blink - do you think this could be firmware related? And would any of the past logs Soup has help us here. It should tell us if it has recognized this media before.

@Soup...one of the first things I do when I have a glitch when things have been working before....Run a reg cleaner (I use ccleaner and make a backup copy of the regfile so all is kosher), do a disk cleanup and disk defrag. Blink taught me this and it has solved some odd problems. But...it does not solve everything...too bad. But...it will not hurt either, especially if you back up your reg file.

Yep it could be a firmware problem.

I like to take a look at when the drive was last updated, how old the burner is (rough est) and media and rated speed of it.
Burners will no recent support may have a recognition problem w/ newer media or maybe it's 'subpar' media.
Cause unless you buy certain one's like Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden or made in Japan Sony, Fuji or Maxell you never know who you may get.

The last one is better I think - since using the same type of media could just mean they have a new spindle made by someone different.
Plus so what was going on at the time.

Hey blink, is there a good guide for reading nero logs? Or burn logs in general. I am still kind of an idiot when it comes to those. And all the DRM burn errors, I see members have, don't get that yet. Any how if you have a fave guide for burn logs I would love to know about it.

    AHA!
I defragged and that seemed to do the trick
I recently installed a tv tuner so I had a lot of recorded tv playing with the pvr. I guess that jumbled some things up.

thanks for your help kitty and binkie :)

Another DMA turned off, even if you aren't using it for your burner--see below. (Hopefully you aren't confusing which burner Nero is looking at!)
    http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/storage/IDE-DMA.mspx

Another Nero 6 interface when using Nero 7--what else wasn't cleaned correctly that might be causing problems?

You're welcome Soup. I am glad it is ok now! I hate oddball issues.

@saltgrass - thank you for posting the dma link. Now after the reg clean and all should Soup be using a nero cleaner and reinstalling nero. I have never fully understood nero, this is why I ask. Is it still likely to cause conflicts?

Glad to hear you're burning again.

Here's another suggestion to possibly stop any more problems.
    Recorder: <HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-5163D>Version: A102
    Update the firmware to A105.
Keeping it updated can help the drive w/ the correct write for media esp. the newer ones.

    Happy Burning!

    @kitty66
One thing I noticed when using Shrink - the Nero log always references a prev. gui for Nero version - Using interface version: 6.3.1.4.
Now if they post a log from something that Shrink wasn't involved in a Nero 7 interface version will be listed. Don't why just that the developer of Shrink works for Nero.

Here's a link on some basics of reading a nero log: link.

Here's one on failure reasons from digital video forums: link

    ARRRGH! NOW WHAT!

same, disc not empty, error message, but different I think.

When I tried to upgrade firmware I got this message :
Save_as function is not temporarily supported.
Please just click & open the file. Then, save the file in your PDF reader.
Save_as function will be supported once again ASAP

I don't know much about what I'm doing here, so is this something I should wait to do later?

I don't know much about what I'm doing here, so is this something I should wait to do?

Ugh! I didn't check the firmware link b/4 I posted it.
Bad link - no longer there basically.
So it can wait til I find another one - hopefully.

Plus from this log the media is fully recognized:
    Media Specific [16..63]:
    00 00 07 43 4D 43 20 4D - 41 47 00 4D 30 31 00 38 ...CMC.MAG.M01.8
    23 54 37 18 00 3E 6E 00 - 70 62 15 15 0B 0B 08 08 #T7..>n.pb......
    01 19 1B 0B 0B 0E 0F 01 - 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ................

But it's not very good media at all and may just be the problem.
Better would be Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, made in Japan Sony, Fuji or Maxell.

    CdRomPeripheral : _NEC DVD+-RW ND-3650A atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: Off
I'd still turn DMA mode on for this drive too - best to have all in DMA mode. Here's a guide.

Once you get it turned back on - try this drive too to burn.

    Burn process failed at 16x
Take the burn speed down to 8x or less.

Give that a go and let us know. I'll check for another firmware update link itmt.

edit: found a newer one A106 (this one works)

I went through the guide for dma mode

    The current transfer mode in
primary IDE channel device 0 is ultra DMA mode 6
primary IDE channel device 1 is not applicable
primary IDE channel device 0 is not applicable
primary IDE channel device 1 is not applicable

secondary IDE channel device 0 is PIO --- DMA if available
secondary IDE channel device 1 is not applicable
secondary IDE channel device 0 is not applicable
secondary IDE channel device 1 is not applicable

SO I should uninstall the secondary IDE channel in PIO mode and just reboot?

I usually turn the speed down to 8x but I guess I forgot that time.
I was having a lot of trouble with DVD Shrink and I figured out that you can compress with nero recode. It seems to be working so far.

Yes soupnazi uninstall the secondary ide channel and reboot.
Windows will reinstall and should set the current transfer mode back to DMA.

Good to hear you're having success w/ recode too!
