My ND-2510a DVD-rw drive came with my Gateway 505R pc. Because it's an OEM install I am unable to update the firmware via the resources I've found in these forums.

How can I update my firmware so the drive will stop getting illegal disk errors?

Most times you will find firmware for a OEM drive like that from the computer manufacturer. I am assuming you did not find it there?

If the manufacturer doesn't have updated firmware, you are sort of left on your own. Installing another firmware may void any warranty you have, so you have to check that. If you were to decide to go ahead and try to update it by another means, do a Google search for it or check below. The actual site may vary depending on your location, but you should be able to get their through the NEC site.

You did not give a reason why you could not update the firmware.

Why didn't I update firmware? Gateway says there is no update. Tried NECs 2.19 update & got this message: "Target NED ND2510A is not found correctly"

    Hi.

Look at the firmware at the following links:

    http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/
    http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/page/en/NEC-ND-2500A/
    http://www.herrie.org/firmwares/nec2510.html

You might try the nonNEC brand firmware first.

Even though one of these firmwares may flash to your burner, none have been updated for a while as the 2510 went out of production many moons ago. It is doubtful any were updated for any of the newer 16X media. There comes a time when you just need to let it go and get a new burner. Otherwise, if you purchase 4X/8X media you probably won't have a need to locate newer firmware. I have a 2500 that works fine with 8X Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden media.

Eureka! I did it! I flashed with the Dangerous Brothers 2.18. Then was able to flash with NECs 2.19. It works! No illegal disk error with my Imation DVD-Rs - even at Maximum speed (8x)!

I'm trying a Staples DVD-R now. Wish me luck!!

Thanks for the nudge it the right direction!

If you use liggyand dees nec 2510 bitsetting firmware 2.19 fast you can booktype your dvd+r s to dvd-rom. I'm using it and it works fine. you will need the bin flash gui from liggy also.
