Hi, I just got a Pioneer External DVD RW today and it came with Nero 6.0 and Cyberlink. I've downloaded both them and tried burning a DVD with no luck on either of them. I have downloaded files in AVI format and MPG format. I thought it would be as simple as dropping the files into a new DVD project and clicking burn, but it hasn't been so far. I bought Maxell DVD-R's with 4.7 GB of space. The movie's i'm trying to burn require more space then that. On Cyberlink it won't even let me start the burning process, because the files exceed the disc capacity. On Nero it let's me get all the way to the end and wait 45 mins, before it tells me it can't complete the process( Can't remember exactly what it says for a reason.) I've read on here that Nero should automatically detect that it can't fit on the DVD and still work somehow, but it hasn't for me. Any help would be appreciated.

Did you save your Nero log so that you can post that? Otherwise look in the path below and see if the Nero History log has a section that pertains to what you tried to do. Be sure to edit out your name and serial number before posting.

Program Files -> Ahead -> Nero -> NeroHistory

Nerovision is the program that Nero uses to convert files to be DVD compliant.

I don't know anything about Cyberlink.

A good program for converting avis or any other format to DVD is VSO's ConvertXtoDVD. It's highly recommended around here:

    http://www.vso-software.fr/products/convert_x_to_dvd/

They have a free trial although it watermarks its output. It's currently 20% off through August 31 if you find you like it.

I just try and burn a disc and here's what it said:

"Sorry, your compilation cannot be written on this kind of disc. Please insert a disc of the correct type or modify the settings of your compilation to make them compatable with your disc."

I'm using NeroVision Express 3 SE. Here's what it says under details when I go to burn the DVD.

    Sample format:
    Audio format: Stereo
    Encoding mode: Fast Encoding (1-Pass)

    Number of titles: 3
    1. Simpson's Movie Pt. 1 (Video Title, 0h 27m 45s)
    Video mode: PAL
    Aspect ratio: 4:3
Quality: Super long play (1150 kbps)
    Resolution: 352 x 288 (1/4 D1)
    Audio SmartEncoding ratio: 0.0 %
    Video SmartEncoding ratio: 0.0 %
    2. Simpson's Movie Pt. 2 (Video Title, 0h 27m 52s)
    Video mode: PAL
    Aspect ratio: 4:3
Quality: Super long play (1150 kbps)
    Resolution: 352 x 288 (1/4 D1)
    Audio SmartEncoding ratio: 0.0 %
    Video SmartEncoding ratio: 0.0 %
    3. Simpson's Movie Pt. 3 (Video Title, 0h 27m 45s)
    Video mode: PAL

Here's my History for Nero as well, I accidentally used the wrong drive my first time, but on my other attempts I used my DVD-RW.

It appears as though you selected to make a CD project but are inserting a blank DVD causing Nero to reject that disk. You need to select the DVD recorder as the output/recorder type. Are you selecting to make a video CD or a DVD-video as the project type? Are you using StartSmart? The Nero SE version is likely limited in functionality compared to the full version. It may not burn DVDs. I don't know. If you cannot select a DVD type project, it may be a limitation of the cut down version of the product.

hmmm...it appears I was selecting to make a VCD instead of a DVD. Now when I go to create a DVD project, it says that my files (.avi and .mpg) arn't the correct format. It has to be .ifo or .bup. Is there a program I can use to convert files? and is there a major difference between VCD's and DVD's?

VCDs and SVCDs are mpeg1 in format and go onto CDs.

    DVDs use mpeg2 format.

The biggest difference of course is that a DVD holds roughly a little more than 6 times as much data as a CD.

You just need to select make a DVD video. Nerovision accepts nearly any file format and will convert to DVD.

    http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/272946

There are lots of Nero guides on the intertubes; just do a search for Nero guides or Nero convert AVI to DVD. Some do not like using Nero for AVI conversions because of audio sync problems. ConvertX is the program of choice for many. Personally, I prefer having a DVD player that plays AVI/divx files so I don't have to worry about doing conversions in the first place. $30 will get you a cheapy that plays all formats--DVD, AVI, SVCD, VCD, etc.

Thanks for all the help laddyboy. I just tried out ConvertXToDVD and it worked out perfectly. So I bought the full version, and am about to burn another disc without the watermarks.
