Problems with Multiple Burners using DVD Shrink

I am ready to throw my laptop through the window. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the length of this, but I need some serious help and want to provide as complete a picture of the problem as possible.

Have a laptop, 1.8GHZ, 20GB, 256MB. For many months, I was able to backup using DVD Shrink to a Lite-On 811S using an external enclosure without problems. (Connected by a USB 2.0 cable). Suddenly, it started taking 6 hrs plus to back-up a dvd.

I use DVD Shrink to rip and either DVD Decrypter or Nero to burn.

So, I got a great deal on a Sony DRU-710A, installed it in the enclosure and the same issues, although I never let any of the back-ups complete. I tried to burn CDs without success as well.

The IDE channels all indicated DMA, but as was indicated in many forums, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the IDE Channels without success.

Called Sony support and was told that due to the complexity of these newer DVD writers, that the internal writer could not successfully be used with an external enclosure. I didn't quite believe him, but I wasn't having success in fixing the problem otherwise.

So, I bought a MadDog MegaStor 7-in-1 external writer. Connected by a USB 2.0 cable. Again, no success in burning DVDs or CDs. The DVD burn took 10 minutes to get to 1% before I aborted. The CD burn failed with the following:

    #28 SCSI-500 File Cdrdrv.cpp, Line 1442
SCSI Exec, HA 2, TA 0, LUN 0, buffer 0x082E0000

    PLEASE HELP!

Use Nero tools to run a test dirve on your DVD. You may have a problem with the USB. Are you on a 2.0 port. Try again on unstalling IDE and DVD.

I see you have 256mb ram... You might want to boost that to at least 512. That has worked for me.
