Hi my computer is about 6 years old now.

I have an ASUS A7A266-E Socket A Motherboard ALiMaGiK 1 Chipset.

It has an AMD Athlon XP1800+ processor. Can i just lug in any socket A processor such as the Athlon XP3200+ and have it work straight away???

    Cheers,

    David McKechan

you need to check which cpu your mobo will support
to be honest if your pc is 6 years old it wont be worth upgrading,i sold a pc that cost me a grand 4 years ago for £75 last week

id start from new and maybe keep your hardrive & dvd rom to save you a few quid

yeah was thinking that. Looks like the fastest chip I could get wouldn't be that much faster.

    Thanks for your input.

i think that you might need to update your bios to fit the xp3200. it would give you a noticable boost but it wont break any benchmark records.

the thing is you might be wasting money on it, if you still want more performance in another 4-6 weeks time, and you then end up buying a new setup anything you spend on this will be wasted.
