hello, could you give more detail.

i presume the file is video and have an mp4 extension.
an avi file is simply a mpeg4 video. the avi is the container to put the video and audio together.

try using virtualdubmod, i'm not sure if it accepts pure mp4 or m4v, but give it a try. put it on direct stream copy and save as .avi or .mkv

yes, its a video file with an mp4 extension. i tried to use the virtualdubmod program but it doesn't recognize the file. the video has picture and audio and said it came straight off a dvd. the thing im wanting to do is convert it to an avi file so that i can burn it to a vcd and the nero im using only recognized avi and mpeg files to encode and burn. any other possible advice?

You can convert to avi with TMPGEnc. First you need to install the QT MOV plugin( http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/4942/svcd.html ). You may need to install 3ivx too( http://www.3ivx.com/ ). Open your mp4 with TMPGEnc, go to File>Output To File>AVI File, select your compression settings and click "save".

If you have Quictime Pro you can export as avi as well.
