A new PS2 model is out in Asia. Serial no. is 50006 which can read DVD +- R/RW?

Have you guys heard about it? Do we still need a mod chip to play backup DVDs then?

If you dont have a chip or any mod device, you cannot play backed up games at all (read the many posts on this topic). As for dvd movies, now that is a different story. I know you can watch backed up movies on the PS2. There is a difference in a burned game and a burned movie. The mod chip fools the PS2 to think the dvd in the drive (if that dvd is a burned game) is an actual PS2 game (skip data here and there or something like that). Other wise if the dvd is a movie, it will just read it as if it were the real thing (no mod chip needed). Got it? Hope that helps.

Well nakanenui, If you would have paid attention to what he asked then you would have seen he wasnt asking about older systems capability. He was asking about a new system (50006) in asia. I would imagine sony has incorporated some sort of technology to prevent us from playing backups. That would sound just like any bigwig corp. trying to suck money outta lil kids.
