So I bought an AR MAX from CEX and when I pop it into my PS2 and boot it up it says "Please insert your Action Replay Max hardware" which I do not have, how can I get my PS2 to load it without the hardware?

I doubt it is possible. Time to buy AR MAX that has the hardware.

No there are 3 forms of the AR Max one that comes with a memory card(varying sizes), one that comes with a USB flash drive, and one that comes with neither. The one that comes with a memory card is the only one that says to insert the hardware. That means you got an old one that most likely won't work for softmodding as I think you have to have a newer one that comes with a USB flash drive or nothing. I could be wrong though.
