I recently purchased a PS2 and have been doing some research on modchips. I was surprised when I read that I didn’t need a modchip and could use swap magic boot disk. This is fantastic!
Although a question came to mind. If you can boot a backup without a modchip how come we can’t backup games that will autoload possibly using similar code to swap magic? I know the Sega Dreamcast could do this.

because the makers of swap magic pressed the code over an original ps2 game (so it still has all the copy protection stuff the ps2 looks for). You can make your own autoboot games if you got yourself a dvd press :)
