this happened to me once, it says reading disc but then "reading disc" dissapears in about 2 secs and nothing happens, this is because your laser is dead or broken, i broke mine myself by accident because i cleaned it with white spirit :S

White spirit, whoa, I think thats way to strong for that laser, could screw with it.

When you look at the laser eye, does it look creamy at the top?

You'll have to buy a new laser, these go for about £20($40) on ebay look around for your version and model number.

It isnt hard, its quite simple, but you need to make sure that you dont lose anything, because a few clips are quite small, and are necessary to hold everything in place.

so if you lose one clip, you lose the whole ps2?

Not really, you lose the drive assembly, some of the drive units have screws, some have clips, there is a guide online that tells you how to change the laser, I will try find it, and get back to u.
