Ok, so I bought a HDMI cable for my monitor and PS3, but I don't have any sound. I know about the optical audio cord, but I don't want to buy any extra hardware like a reciever or processor. So my questio is what is the cheapest way I can get sound on my PS3 will still using the HDMI connection?

Can you use the cable supplied with the PS3 at the same time as the hdmi? This would give you stereo phono outputs.

Your PS3 is probably trying to send an audio format that your TV is incapable of decoding. On your PS3, go under Sound Settings>Audio Output Settings>HDMI>Manual> Once you are here you should have only 2 things checked. They are Linear PCM 2 Ch 44.1kHz and Linear PCM 2 Ch 48 kHz. That should do it.
