Good question. I don't know about HDMI and how you would go about it. I use component cables and plug the video output to tv and audio to my surround sound

i don't think that your reciever can process the hdmi sound if it came as part of a home theatre in a box; the hdmi is probably just pass-thru (but a model number would be nice). however, you can run an optical toslink cable to the reciever from the ps3, which will give you 5.1 surround sound. don't forget to change the settings on the ps3 too

Here's where you can get one for a good price

yup, just go to the audio settings and choose the optical toslink cable as your music output, not hdmi

if your reciever is not a pass thru hdmi then you can also use its sound. cause hdmi is like all in one with sounds and video.
