    Firmware Update (v2.00)

+ Posted by Eric Lempel // Director, PlayStation Network Operations

Hi everyone. Here’s a preview of the next PLAYSTATION 3 firmware update (2.00) scheduled to release within the next few days. This update contains features that will allow you to receive news directly from us on everything PlayStation, enhance the way you access and organize your media, and allow you to customize your XMB in new ways.

Here’s a closer look at the new features:

You’ll notice this icon in the Network category of the XMB. This is the Information Board.

Once activated, you’ll notice scrolling headlines in the upper right-hand corner of your screen. We’ll be delivering the latest news on new games, PLAYSTATION Store updates, hardware, accessories and lots more through the Information Board. Click on the Information Board icon and you’ll be able to see all of the headlines and click through for more detail. The headlines and associated stories will be updated on a regular basis. You can choose not to display the Information Board, but you never know what you might miss, so I’d recommend keeping it on.

We’ve added a nice enhancement to Remote Play called Remote Start, to use Remote Play locally or from a Wi-Fi hotspot, you needed to make sure that your PS3 was on. With Remote Start this is no longer necessary. As long as your PS3 is in standby mode, you’ll be able to turn your PS3 on remotely via the PSP. You can then use Remote Play to access media on your PS3, and when you’re finished you can put your PS3 back into standby mode.

Another feature we’ve added with this update is the ability to set themes on your PS3. Themes will change the whole look of your XMB; the background, icons, and in some cases sounds on your XMB will completely change. We will be providing themes on PlayStation.com and through the PLAYSTATION Store. Once you have downloaded a theme, under Settings go to Theme Settings, select Theme and then choose a theme to display or install a new theme. We are also providing the ability for you to get creative and make your own original themes.

We’ve also added a new way to organize your photos and music on the PS3 - you can now create custom playlists for all of your music and photos.

Finally, regular readers of this blog may have noticed that I’m using a new avatar. You will see that logo above on your XMB representing the new PLAYSTATION Network category. You’ll find the PLAYSTATION Store and Account Management in this category.

We’ve added several other features in this update. I’ll soon be back with more details with a quick video demo of some of the new features.

As always thanks for all of your support and feedback.

Can't wait till it comes out! Just got a PS3 yesterday! I have a question? How do you get the gamertag thing for the PS3! I have mine for Xbox 360, but want one with the PS3 for a different forum! Do you know where to get that?

yup I'm DLing it right now. It really doesn't live up to what 2.00 was hyped to be or what you would think it would be. Most of this really should've been there from the start. But even so, no In-game XMB access really kills it. =[

Yeah all thats cool.. but when are they going to touch the real issues people have been asking about.. in game access to the XMB, Messaging from ingame?? THere a few more that I keep noticing Sony just over looks and throws some seemly over hyped features, then your like.. damn this sucks...

It's cool we got custom themes, but sucks because I doubt there's any good ones.

All we can do is wait and be optimistic about it... Every update that PS3 gives us always improves our system anyways... It just a matter of time before we get in-game XMB...

Yeah im also dissapointed about in-game xmb, like in pro 7 or warhawk you cant reply to messages without quitting the game, but why is it that Resistance Fall of man has a option called friends where you can access the xmb messages from there thats cool.

Anyone having problems getting into STORE after this update? Not sure if thats why it wont work for me or not, but thats the only thing thats changed since I was in there yesterday.

EDIT: I can still sign into PSN my Store just wont work, must be down or having network problems or something. Anyone else having this problem?

Yeah I'm having trouble with the store and account management as well.

And all the mythical hyped up 2.0 update was F***ING themes???!!! They already had them on the psp for a LONG time how the hell do they get away with crapping out this weak of an update and giving it the 2.0 status. All it was is themes play lists the remote play turn on thing (nice I'll admit) and that stupid ad bar.

Seriously if they'd just buckle down and work on the in-game xmb we'd be equal if not superior to live, beside the fact that we've been asking for it since the release day. Excuse me but I'm just really pissed. Have a nice day :)

P.S. Being able to use our own images for our PSN avatar would be a HUGE thumbs up in my books as well.

I am with you on that! Freakn 6 months of FW 2.0 Hype! Its funny if you look back at threads and other websites, everyone is posting all these ideas and so called facts about what 2.0 will contain.. Then the date comes, no 2.0.. Again, again and again, then all of a sudden its "official". Its released and contained nothing more than repeated idea s from the PSP! Sony is really trying to keep the PSP alive...LOL.. Dont get me wrong I like some of the features in all the latest updates, but I think I speak for a lot of people, 2 features I would love to have would be 1st- in game XMB access, for messaging,music,etc.. 2nd- I would like to see more added compatible formats for video, such as avi's(xvid,etc...). Oh also it would be cool to have personal email client and a muiti-account IM for yahoo, aol, msn, and even myspace...guess that would go into complicated licensing fees and so forth.. POP email would be cool though...
