    Hi all,
I've noticed that I've been having some difficulties with the results of my dvd backups. I've used both DVDXcopy and DVD Shrink. Using either software my backups tend to skip, or the picture kind of breaks up a bit, etc. It happens about 4-5 times during the movie. I have a Pioneer Elite 45a player, I use a Lite-on dvd burner.
Can these problems be the result of poor quality dvd's? or possibly something to do with my pc like Antivirus software running during the ripping process?
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    B

Bingo! That would be my first guess. Skipping/freezing are the classic signs of low quality media. Some good ones to try would be Ritek G04, Verbatim Metal AZO or Taiyo Yuden.

For the remainder of your present discs it may help to burn them slower :)

I have burned many a disc.....Tried about every brand there is out there.....Personally I cant tell any difference between the more expensive disc than the cheaper ones...The cheaper disc i have bought on ebay burn just as good "for me anyway" as the top brand name ones....The only time i have had trouble with a skipping or freezing disc, is when I tried to burn movies on a slower computer.....When I first started burning movies i had lots of trouble with freezing dvd's....Bought a new computer, a new memorex burner and use dvdxcopy and never have any more freezing or skipping dvd's...So I think alot of people that have trouble with thier backup disc, freezing or skipping, should look at thier pc first.....

While I agree that keeping your PC lean, mean and clean is a great start, it is a inescapable fact that poor media and the use of labels on media will ultimately lead to skipping and freeezing problems.

I tend to use what many would consider as lower quality media (Laser, Ul-Tran and TDK) and have not experienced any problems to date other than one batch of white topped Lasers.

Also different burners appear to have differing media tolerances - if you can obtain quality media at reasonable prices - do so. I have never used Ritek as they are not generally available in my area but if they were - I would certainly give them a try.

Minimizing the number of programs running is in the background is advisable but I always leave my antivirus and spyware programs running

There aren't really any "absolute rules" with regards to media, but as a general observation I've seen many, many people's problems cleared up by using quality media. Does this mean everyone will have horrible results with low grade media? No, but more people have problems with them than don't.

    skenzer,

Another very good thing to do would be to update your burner's firmware if you haven't done so. Newer firmwares typically help media compatibility. Here's a link and be very careful to install the firmware for your exact model of drive:

If you have any questions at all about doing this please ask beforehand :)
