Found this solution in a Newegg review to help Lite-On drives which are stubborn or refuse to open without a disc in them.
    1. Open up the drive, use a pin to hit the emergency tray release, remove the front bezel. Take the 4 screws out that hold the bottom cover on the drive, carefully pull the top shell of the drive. The white plastic puck contains a strong magnet which holds the disk spindle closed, and it seems that the magnet is too strong and won't let the drive open when there is no disk inserted. The solution...Make a spacer out of Duct Tape. Use 2 layers of a good quality duct tape. Make a washer 10 MM in diameter with a 2MM center hole. I placed mine on the spindle itself and it works, the author suggested that you put it on the plastic piece itself. I will post pics later if anyone needs a visual guide to what I am talking about. I know it's late and my mind is most likely not the most concise at this point in time.
