my basic question, and basic step by step answers would be usefull.

i downloaded dvd shrink and dvd decrypter like suggested.

    I have a dvd movie.
I want to copy it, and burn it.

I use nero vision to burn dvds.

Now that I have shrink and decrypter installed, what do I need to do to copy my dvd to my hard drive so i can burn it?

The one element that may go wrong for you here, is if decrypter doesn't get around the DVD's protection. So here we go. Put your original into the dvd drive. Open decrypter and you'll notice by sight and sound that it's doing its thing. It now has identified the type of encryption devices on the disk. Now choose the destination folder you want it to RIP to. Create a new folder in the hdd you have. EG: C:\Rip it to here, click ok, now you will notice that this folders name and directory appear in the decrypters slot.

Assuming all settings in decrypter are at default, press the dvd to hdd icon. Now make a cuppa and sit tight. At the end of a sucessful rip, you'll hear it play a happy tune. Quit decrypter and open shrink. Click open files and point to the folder the files were ripped to..C:\Rip it to here, press ok and shrink will do a quick analysis(2-3mins) Now press backup, choose another folder for it to encode to EG: C:\Encode to here. it will now start to encode the files ripped in the other folder, to this folder. Time for another bourbon. This takes a short while so sit tight. Now the dvd drive drawer opens up, remove your original, and pop in a blank, close it up and forget about it. Time for more chasers. When the burn process is complete, shrink will eject your new backup......job done.

Please understand that I didn't go into all the variouse settings of those two programs, simply because they are available in Alkohol and fasfrank's revamped guides and downloads site. BBmayo has another set of guides and downloads also. But what I've explained allbeit simplisticly, is just that....simple stuff...yeah?

Here are those links to guide you with all the necessary tweaks and soforth you'll need. Lastly, and very importantly, choose high quality media, burn at half it's rated speed, and it's happy days from here.

    Cheers.

EDIT: Don't open nero, shrink does it for you :)

Simple, you need to add one more piece of software to get the job done with the new copy protections. Install RipIt4Me. http://www.ripit4me.org/guide.html You can look over the guide and get the downloads you need there. When installed the 1-click mode decrypts (even the more difficult new copy protections), cleans, and processes for compliance, and then opens in Shrink for a compliance test with the quick analysis. With Shrink loaded all you have to do is go ahead and do the transcode and burn. When you click backup, select Nero and your burner drive and it opens Nero to burn when Shrink finishes transcoding.

If you got a few bucks buy AnyDVD to run in the background and you can get past the encryptions. You can't just burn a movie.

You're welcome. The current problem is that AnyDVD isn't getting the job done by itself on all of the new releases. DVDIdle has had even more problems catching up. AnyDVD has to have the CloneDVD 2 to go along with it for some of the new releases. I own AnyDVD, so I'm not pleased with how Slysoft has let support slip recently. I hear they have new fish to fry with the new HD encryption software. NI4M is a freebie and has been doing better than the other programs recently.

Your DVD Burner has the DMA setting off.
Go into the Device Manager, expand the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers and uninstall the channel with the burner on it. It's usually the Secondary Channel. Reboot and check to make sure the drive is back in DMA. That could be the cause of your problem.

As for Shrink, Shrink doesn't burn. It starts the Nero for you, but the burning is all Nero after that. Just browsing through it looks like multiple errors in your Nero log. Hopefully getting the DMA on for the burner will cure it. If not, you may want to burn your output files to the hard drive and use Nero to run a simulation burn to see if it's a media related problem or all software and hardware. Then post the log for the simulation so we can compare.

By the way, when you encounter burn problems, always make sure your firmware is up to date as well. Get the DMA on and check the firmware are the first 2 things you need to do with the DMA the first.

im slightly concerned with this statement, but maybe you just misspoke, but clone dvd 2 has nothing to do with breaking the encryption on the DVD, that is all up to anydvd. (or FAB, or RIPIT4me.)

No I did not misspeak. You're right in part but you obviously overlooked the fact that transcoding software can play a part in how the files are handled during the transcoding process. CloneDVD 2 can help with the shortcomings of AnyDVD. As many like to say, they were made for each other. If you'll notice, some people complained of Slysoft suggesting they use CloneDVD 2 when having problems with programs like Shrink. If you want a running tally of problems seen with AnyDVD, review the Saw 3 thread stickied here in the Shrink forum.

Sometimes I'm not clear enough and other times I don't go in depth enough. No problem.

If you check around Slysoft has released a beta AnyDVD-HD that's making the rounds. I noticed Ireland posted the link in the safty valve section.

    @zanev,

    just to add,

Not very good disks at all, try Verbatims, or Taiyo Yudens

Try not to multi-task when burning too.

Way too slow, even for those kind of disks, dont go any higher than 4x speed.

Like I said, DMA and firmware and then look to the media. 300bowler makes some good points on media and not multitasking if you don't have the resources.

Compare what's listed for yours with the latest available. Usually factory support has downloads. I sometimes find the link doing a google. For instance Sony Support Firmware. The one thing not to do is lose power when updating. Otherwise it's a painless process. I've done it many times.

Often a picture is better than a set of directions. Open Nero Infotools to find the Firmware version for the drive. Select the Drive tab, make sure the drive is in the drop down window at the top, the firmware should be listed (arrow in the photo).
