Download HijackThis. Run the program, and click "Do a system scan and save a logfile". Post that logfile here in a reply.

Dunno what's up with the error message, but I'll see what I can find.

A firewall is necessary to prevent against hackers, viruses, and other miscellaneous intrusions. For a free firewall, I recommend Comodo.

You'd think a virus would have a more creative and less obvious name. This is the offending HijackThis entry:

    O4 - Global Startup: VTAgentReboot.exe

Run HijackThis again, and this time, click "Do a scan only". Check the following files:

    O4 - Global Startup: VTAgentReboot.exe
    O16 - DPF: {3860DD98-0549-4D50-AA72-5D17D200EE10} (Windows Live OneCare safety scanner control) - http://cdn.scan.onecare.live.com/resourc...s/wlscctrl2.cab

Hit "Fix Checked" and close HijackThis. Right-click on HijackThis; there should be an option that says "Rename". Click that option, and rename HijackThis.exe to asdf.exe.

Next, download and unzip/extract LSPFix from here. Double-click on LSPFix.exe. It should show an error. This is what I want to happen. Click "Finish", and run LSPFix again. This time, it should not show an error.

For your third step, go to the Start Menu and click "Run". In the box, type the following, without the quotes: "regedit"

DO NOT MESS AROUND WITH THIS NORMALLY! You can seriously mess up your computer and your OS.

A window called "Registry Editor" should pop up. Press F3 (if you have function keys assigned, disable them), and in the search box, type (again, without the quotes): "RunServices"

There should be a pane on the left. When the search finished, the pane should display (near the bottom) a folder named "Run". Click on the folder (not the "+" sign) and try to find something like:
    VTAgentReboot.exe
Right click it and select "Delete". If you cannot find that file, reboot your computer and try to find it.

Finally, open HijackThis and do a scan and save a logfile. Post that logfile here in a reply.

Hi Fredil thanks for all your help - well let me explain during the time I recievied your advice I had already managed to rid myself of the vtruck entry from my registry editor but it took a while because it kept re-appearing when I looked at the msconfig startup. I eventually found hidden files which I managed to be able to view, and deleted the offending file which in turn didn't re-appear again. That said I then got your message and tried to follow it, I managed to delet another file you suggested and think I followed your other advice, but for some reason It did not go as planned ( probably me ) I tried again a few times till eventually I thought I would put my vista disc in and do an install to refresh any files that may have been corrupted as lspfix would not work & they suggested that this was the last resort to do. Well I did the install & I was glad that all my files were still in place, but when I ran hijackthis I'm still getting 2 error messages - the first one being For some reason your
system denied write access to the Host file.......etc. 2nd error message is An unexpected error has occured at procedure: modmain Checkother1item() error #75 - path/file access error. Anyway I have sent this new hijackthis report to see if you can offer any more advice thank you.

hello fredil I ran a few trial software packages namely spyware doctor & spyware detector in spyware detector it reported that I had 2 backdoor viruses it would not delete them untill I bought their product - however they did show you the path to where the files were situated 1 was in c:\prorams\instalshield\some big long number. which I managed to delete the other was in the registry which was "MSCONFIG" Ideleted this also but when I rebooted I checked and the "MSCONFIG" was back again. Also I tried hijack this again, and it scanned okay this time with no error messages so I have sent you this lates scan if that might help you ( I did see a few that said file missing ) but I have not checked any the boxes untill I hear from you.

Sorry about the kinda late reply :)

Well, first of all, you need a firewall. I find http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/]Comodo to be quite useful, though you will have to customize it a bit.

You can remove all the entries that say (file missing) or (no file) at the end.

Reboot your computer, rename HijackThis to asdf.exe, and post another log.

Hi Fredil, I too am sorry for the long delay in replying to your last advice to me. The reason is because I tried to delete various files in regedit that I suspected as being the problem in my PC. The only thing was some files would not delete - even in safe mode. I eventualy decided to do a clean install of windows vista not keeping my old files this time, but I have just done a new HJT scan, and I can only manage to get this to work if I run the program as an Administrator. The missing files you told me to delete, unfortunately won't delete - they reappear when I do another scan?

You reinstalled your OS? Well, that's an option.

Can you do another scan and post your log again? It's either Vista being incompatible with HijackThis, or the log got cut off.

Hi Fredil as you can see from the top line of HJT that it does not recognise the OS (unknown) so you must be right about the HJT version I use - ( is there a version for vista ultimate ? ). Worryingly when I tick boxes 010 & 023 & click fix, when I do another scan they all re-appear again.

The O10 and O23 are normal; they are components of Vista.

Download HijackThis from that link; it is a Trend Micro HijackThis beta and may (no guarantees) work better with XP. It works the same way, too.

hi Fredil I downloaded the latest hjt version, at first it would not run without some stops, but then I realised I should have ran the program as Administrator which the next time it opened up fine. I have included the latest scan which you will notice that 010 has gone & also there is no missing files in 023. I did also download from the microsoft site Windows live onecare scanner (free 90 day trial ) when it did a free pc scan it did find 75 errors in the registry along with quite a number in temp files. Can you tell me if my latest HJT log is ok or are there anymore files I should remove.
    thanks.

    Hmm... it's even shorter...

Well, with the limited logfile, I can't tell if there's anything wrong. Frankly, I don't think so, but...
