when i run nero (6.3.1.15) and try to write an iso onto a blank dvd, the "used read buffer" goes to 100% perfectly fine. however, the "buffer level" down next to my burner's name (PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-104) stays at 0%. after a minute and a half, nero fails attempting to write a lead-in. no coasters, as it doesn't write anything at all. after searching around on the net i have changed my burner back and forth between udma-2 and pio-4, settling now on pio-4 but still no luck.

decrypter 3.2.2.0 and alcohol120 1.4.7.1005 have the same problem--no "device buffer" and fail on lead-in. I even reinstalled windows without windows update, without my via 4-in-1 drivers, and without forceaspi 1.7. all to no avail. here's all the different errors
    dvd decrypter has given me:
    no more track reservations allowed
    L-EC Uncorrectable Error
    invalid address for write
    no additional sense information

today i just got done burning a couple iso's using my burner and the same nero in a friend's computer just fine. does anyone know why my drive seems to have no buffer on my computer? or what else could be wrong?

Well if the burner is working correctly in another computer, then its got to be upstream from there. I take it that the burner and media can be seen by Nero as the target.

I'm not sure why you are trying to write an iso...Nero Burning ROM should be set to DVD-Video.

Can you post a Nero burn log?

A few more things to check:

Check your IDE cable connections. Check your power supply. Try swapping the burner with the ROM if you have one installed. Make sure your jumper is in the correct position relative to the burner position on the IDE buss. (End connection=master, middle connection= slave)
Try deleting your secondary IDE channel and then rebooting so Windows can reinstall it. It should reinstall with DMA enabled.
Try your friends burner in your computer and see if it works.
    Try running Nero's clean tools:

    http://www.nero.com/en/631938356417810.html

Sorry for the random ideas, maybe one of them will help.

I would like to see a burn log, if you can just copy and paste it into a reply, I might be able to figure out whats going on. If you do, be sure to remove your Nero registration number before posting.

    Cheers,
    Frank

    thanks for the suggestions.

my master/slave setup is correct: dvd-rw is master on far end, jumpered for master; cd-rw is slave on middle; pin 1 on each is lined up correctly because of notched ports. today i cleaned my computer, putting all cables back in as firmly as possible. still no luck. i also tried removing the cd-rw's power and ide plug, leaving the dvd-rw as master cause there's no "single drive" setting. also i removed secondary ide from device manager and let windows reinstall it.

my power supply is a lowly 250 but i don't have anything special...i guess? one hard drive, 2 burners. PCI: sound, tv tuner, lan card, agp geforce 4. 2 extra 80mm fans. cpu is athlon xp 2000+, ram 512 pc2700.

nero driver-cleantool didn't find anything, and the registrychecker.exe doesn't do anything visibly in dos windows or command prompt, so i'm assuming it did what it had to.

my friend's cd burner (lite-on 52x) does the same thing my lite-on 48x cdrw and pioneer dvr-104 dvdrw do: read to image but not write.

i forgot to mention that i'm only using nero now because it has actually for some reason burned a couple successfully. i use isos because i normally use decrypter. its success was random, without me doing anything but restarting (truthfully... i've been randomly trying nero and decrypter w/o changing stuff. my last success was right after i reinstalled windows + nero + decrypter only. it never worked again).
i don't think this randomness means its a media problem though, because the exact same dvdr that nero left blank on my computer burned perfectly with my burner in a friend's.
and, oh yeah, my computer did at one point work perfectly fine. about 3 months ago. don't know when it got screwed up, cause i only burn about twice a month or less. and i ignored it and gave it up about a month ago. all i remember changing critically in that time was updating windows xp and my via 4in1 drivers. but it only worked once after a clean windows installation? i switched primary and secondary ides' cables and my ata 100 hdd still worked, so i don't think it's a failing mobo either.

i'll post my nero log below, hope it clears some stuff up, thanks again, don't want to get a new mobo

forgot to mention my blanks are newly bought "princos" which i've read are sub-par (hard times, eh?), but worked in the other computer i tested my burner in 3 out of 3 times, and also worked on my computer in times of yore...

    Princo....hehe

Try updating your Winaspi to Ver=4.71, might as well start someplace.

    http://adaptec-tic.adaptec.com/cgi-...=9073&p_li=&p_faqid=6608&p_created=1049068800

That registry checker just blinks when you click on it. If there are no probs with the registry thats all it does.

A couple of more things to try:

Do you have a program that will clean and correct your registry? I have a couple that seem to help. This one is pretty good:
    http://www.winguides.com/regmech/

I would like you to try a burn using Shrink and Nero Burning ROM or use Decrypter in file mode and use Recode 2. I am just curious to see this done in a different mode.

I think we should work this as a software problem before trying to figure out if there is a hardware issue.

Other than the Aspi, everything looks normal, I've got one of my burn logs to compare yours to. They look about the same except at the end!

Try that Aspi and run that registry mechanic and we will go from there.

    Cheers,
    Frank

i updated aspi so now i have wnaspi32.dll and aspi32.sys at version 4.711(0), while winaspi.dll and wowpost.exe are still 4.60(1021). i ran registry mechanic, it found a lot of stuff, so i decided to run adaware and spybot too just in case. then ripped a dvd9 disc with Decrypter in file mode successfully, then dvd5'ed w/ recode 2. then tried to burn w/ recode 2...didn't work...it failed on lead in but sealed (or tried to i guess?) the burn. so decrypter is telling me its a complete disc with 1 session but it's so small you can't even see it physically. here's my read and write logs. don't know if the read log would help but i'll post it anyway...

jimduggan...hope you get this fixed...i had a prob with nero in that nearly half my burns ended in coasters whilst every thing seemed fine.Only found out when i watched the discs live.It wasnt a media issue, just nero playing up.Followed all the guides etc, just couldnt trust it.I guess nero and my pc fell out big style.I now use clone to burn(decrypter/dvd2one/clone) and 400 discs later NOT ONE GLITCH!!My point is sometimes you have to say goodbye to software!!!Best of luck

    Hi Jim,

Oriphus has region free firmware for your Pioneer:

    http://www.chrismccann.co.uk/pioneer_firmware_upgrades.htm

    Here's an official version:

    http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/hs/pioneer.html

I found lots of firmware for this drive, yours needs updated:

    Recorder: <PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-104> Version: 1.31

I missed this the first time.

At this point I would suggest doing the firmware update, using different media.
Because you have been doing a lot of registry stuff, it is probably a good idea to remove Nero and then download a fresh .exe to reinstall. Use Nero's cleaner tool:

This tool is designed to properly remove the program.

I forgot to ask, but what other programs do you have installed, Roxio for example can cause conflicts.

Something looked a little odd to me on your last burn log:

Am I looking at the image drive as your I: drive?

Your first burn log showed a different setup.

hmmm...strange...i can burn w/ dvdclone. what an amazing piece of software. too bad it gives you no idea what's going on. otherwise i've only installed nero, decrypter, and shrink. i also installed daemon tools between those burn logs, that's what that virtual drive is. i still can't burn anything other than dvdclone. am i right in concluding that both shrink and decrypter depend on nero somehow? or just shrink?

    Jim,

I have no solution but like to share my experience. With "princo" media, I also ran into buffer and other strange error messages.

I've tried all the sw/firmware recommendations with no successes.

So, I went for a different media. And what do you know? Bang! Everything works like a charm! No need sto change any settings, downloading dll, etc. etc.

You may want try out this simple change of media to see if you can achieve at least a few successful burns.

Note: DVD Decrypter, as well as Nero trial version, just hate "Princo" brand. My experience that the sw will write some header and abort the burning operation right away for coaster collection.

However, with my 200 princo blank discs, I was lucky enough to use "HotBurn" sw to get ~97% successful rate.
Hotburn is the sw shipped with my Iomega drive.

i forgot to mention that my firmware (1.31 for pioneer dvr-104 doesn't seem to be upgradeable (or downgradeable either). it comes stock, and is region free for some reason. i can't upgrade it with any of the firmwares you guys sent me or even pioneer's. so i guess i have to stop using princos huh. princo is a cool name but they really do suck

I have also the Buffer problem. My drive is a Pioneer 107. And what it does is a little strange. The buffer goes all the way to 100% and starts writing the disk at 4x, it takes about 45 seconds to get there (I use ritek g04 disks), but in some cases the drive goes idle for a second or two and the buffer goes back to 0% and after trying, the device buffer goes up again to 90 to 100 %, and back to o% again. I takes twice the time to burn a disk, but the burn comes ok. it is strange because in many cases it does the burn as it should. and some times it does what I just explained. I am using the same ritek media and the same software (Nero), I updated tthe drive firmware and the aspi seems ok. I do not mind to wait 30 minutes for a 4x dvd to burn but it is anyoing and I do not know why is this happening. I also checked the connections and the master slave pin, everything is as it should. Does anybody have an idea what is going on?

    Hi juca39,
Why don't you post a Nero burn log?
Check that you have DMA enabled and all the regular PC maintenance completed. (Defrag, etc.)
How much RAM are you running?

    Fasfrank.
Next time I burn a disk I will post the log. I did not save any when this has happened.
    Yes my DMA is on.
    I am using 256 RAM
    Pentium IV 1.8
Two hard disks: 20 and 40 g's. the 40 g drive is only for temporary files and I check it every time I erase a file. The Hard disks are defragmented when needed.
All connections rechecked and OK. Power OK. Aspi updated. Burner Firmware updated. Pattin OK.
As you can see everything looks fine, but something is wrong. Maybe my drive is not OK. But when checking with Nero it says it is OK. so I don't know.
The media I use is from Ritek GO4 and is fine. After burning no pixels or skips or anything.
This happening to me is odd, because it only happens once in a while, like one time out of 6.
As said before, the burn is O.K but it takes twice the time to burn.
Bur I am concerned thinking that very soon the Buffer will stay at 0% and I will not be able to burn anything.
I also must say that this only happens with Nero, with decrypter it doesn't happen, but the burn DVD is not recognized by my home DVD, so I must burn with Nero in order for me to watch the DVD in my home player.

I'm wondering if you are running out of RAM. Just a theory right now. Try and disable as many processes as you can while performing the burn. That might free up enough memory to make a difference.

You probably have a burn log but just don't know where it is. Nero apparently creates one after every burn. I have four or five that Nero saved. I didn't know Nero was saving logs until I happened upon the location while visiting the Nero website a couple of weeks ago. See if you have some logs here:
    C:\Program files\Ahead\Nero\NeroHistory.log

If you have a log that you can identify as one of your "slow" burns, just copy and paste it into your reply. Make sure you remove your Nero registration number though.

    Cheers,
    Frank

When news of the first dual format DRU-500 were released I read an article where the tester experienced numerous problems. He finally discovered that it was his 300 W PSU. 250 W is just too little, I couldn't swear that that's the problem but it's certainly a strong contender.

    juca39...

I had a similar memory-related problem and found that the default virtual memory settings were not enough to handle the large files involved...so I increased it. Here is a good discussion, with fixes, on virtual memory for XP: http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.php . The same would apply to other OS's.

I would also suggest doing a simple memory diagnostic on your RAM. Microsoft offers a free d/l here: http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp . You will be prompted to make a startup diskette, which will run several different tests on your RAM. If one of the tests fail, it is a good indication why you experience a random memory-related problem. I would add here that if you get the same failure code for all your sticks, it is the MB that is likely failing.

I agree about the PS it may not be causing the problem, but it's possible. For that system I'd recommend at least 300 Watts, if not 350. Just the number of drives and PCI devices is enough to justify that. On a related note, having a low quality power supply (even one with the correct wattage) can cause all kinds of strange problems as well. I stick with Antec or Enermax personally.
