Okay, so yesterday my PS3 was working fine. I was playing MW3 for awhile until my PS3 shut down and the red light flashed. I turned it back on and it worked for maybe 30 mins on Red Dead Redemption, but then it did the same thing and after that when I would turn it on, it would just turn back off. I always took care of it meaning, I NEVER dropped it OR mistreated it. IT can't be an overheating problem because I let it sit with the cover off and a fan on it all last night and when I turned it on again, it did the same thing. I also tried taking the HDD out and re-installing it. That didn't work either. I also did the hard reset and formatted the HDD. But nothing is working. I Was thinking about getting a new HDD but I don't want to buy a new one and that not be the problem.. Helpp!?

The overheat problem people talk about is that the PS3 has overheated to the point where the solder on the cpu and gpu has cracked, loosening some of the pins which is why the PS3 doesnt always start.

So to fix this you have to reflow the solder on the cpu and gpu. Look on youtube for the heat gun fix.

Problem is that the flashing red light just means there is a hardware fault.

90% of the times it is usually because of the above I believe. So it's not a guarantee that the heat gun fix will fix your PS3, but it is your best bet really.

You will have to buy some thermal paste, and yes you could buy some really cheap stuff, but when it comes to this it really is worth spending more on the expensive stuff. Antec or Arctic silver is cheaper now, and those 2 are good, but there are also a few better more expensive ones available now.

So try the heat gun fix if you feel confident doing it yourself. Buying a new hdd will not fix the problem, and if teh heat gun fix doesnt work you'll probably have to end up paying $ony to fix it, but buying a second hand would would probably be cheaper I think now.

I assumes you have a phat ps3. IF so is it a launch one which can play PS2 games?
