anyone know if it is possible to remove very small portions of audio from a dvd? for example, if i wanted to burn a dvd and remove the sound when someone curses. this would make some movies more suitable for my nephews.

Any good audio editor will allow you to blank out, or beep over something.
Audacity (free), and Goldwave (shareware) are popular.
