i was wanting some advice, iam exchanging my white hdmi xbox with a e74 error and my friends black hdmi elite console which sometimes wont read games first time and have been offered two fully working none hdmi xbox 360's with j-tag so we can run games off a hard drive. for £100, we know the picture wont be as good, we want to know if its a good deal and not a step backwards with the consoles not having hdmi. we are both new to the xbox360 and are not bothered about live

The picture isn't that bad if you use the component cable, it can do up to 1080i. I wouldn't do that trade though, those old boxes are around 6 years old and have massive heat problems.

I wouldn't do it. Non-HDMI (Xenon) consoles are problematic. They are the 1st incarnation of the 360, not well designed, and overheat, a LOT.

Just have your e74 error fixed and replace the laser or drive in the Elite, then have the two consoles RGH'd which is essentially the same as JTAG'd but works on most all consoles. You'll spend a little bit, but I assure you it's better than getting those non-HDMI boxes reflowed in 4 months and again and again. Think about it, there is a reason he'll give you 2 JTAGs for two "broken" boxes. It's because the "broken" boxes problems are not big problems at all, especially the Elite's 8 dollar laser.

Burning: You need an IHAS burner with burner max firmware. Ripping: You either need an original Xbox 360 drive or a DROM 3616. I would hack the drives yourself, it's pretty easy.
