What is the basic procedure for this? For instance if I buy an xbox with a bad samsung drive and I can't get the key, can I buy a new samsung (or other drive) and replace it even without knowing the original key?

No you can't. The key in the drive and the key in the console's motherboard must match, which is why you have to dump the key from the old drive and flash it to the new drive.

If the keys don't match, then the 360 won't play games. It'll only play DVDs & music CDs.

Isn't it possible to use the nandx to get the mobo key now? I was planning on doing a rge with coolrunner and nandx and I thought I remember something about being able to now get the key from the mobo.

I have not done any rgh or any of that. So not sure about that. It is likely you will be able to get the key even from bad drive. They mostly fail from bad laser.

What about the other part of my question. Can I use the original sammy key and use it in a lite on or other drive if the key is spoofed?

I would think so. I don't think the ap25 check is sent by a motherboard that came with samsung drive. The osig on the motherboard (in theory) should be for samsung and not send the check.

Can anybody else weigh in? Also I meant the coolrunner can retrieve the key, not just the nandx.

You would use the Nand-X to dump your nand and write your RGE'd nand. Install the Coolrunner. Then through Xell, you could see and write down the key, to spoof to whatever drive you want.

Yep. Not good for Live, but if you RGE, who cares about Live, right?

With the CoolRunner installed, boot into Xell to see your key.

I know RGE is not good for live, but suppose I decide not to do RGE. Can I still do the key swap on a different drive type and go online? I thought this would be ok but you are suggesting otherwise.

Not anymore since the newer dashboard versions spoofing supposedly isn't live safe anymore. If you had a Benq or Lite-on and spoofed your drive XDG3 games would give error E66 on an attempt to boot.

    Spoofing is oil.
    XboxLive is water.
    They don't mix.

I thought spoofing was just changing the key to that of a hacked firmware version (like when you spoof to target in JF). You seem to be defining it as taking one drive and changing that same key on a different version drive (i.e. benq to lite-on).

Yeah but since the new dashboard update and lite-on update to 02510c it's not considered xbl safe anymore and XDG3 games just give E66 when you try to play them on a spoofed drive.
