I recently bought a 60GB backwards compatible PS3. I've been able to load PS3 games to the internal HDD via BlackBox and FileZilla and load them with Rogero with no problems. No complaints there. It works beautifully! But the main reason I bought this system was for it's backwards compatibility. It will of course play original PS2 and PS1 games discs fine but I had assumed I would be able to play backed up PS2 and PS1 games the same way I did PS3 games via Rogero. I was wrong.

Now, I've come up with the following information from some googling. Could somebody please verify that this will work without any glitches. I need to install Open PS2 Loader on my PS3. Then I need to have the PS2 games (mine are all in ISO format) on an external USB drive which has been formatted to FAT32. Then I need to insert an original (not copied) disc of Swap Magic and I should be able to boot the PS2 game from the external drive. Am I correct in all this? Will this also work for PS1 games? If not, is there any solution for running them too?

Now my only dilemma is that my 1TB external HDD is full with about 1TB of stuff that I am by no means willing to delete and have nowhere else to transfer to. So I can't format it to FAT32 because it will erase everything. My only Flash Drive is only 1GB so most games won't even fit on it. I'm a little over budget now after buying the PS3 and all the accessories I needed with it so I'm looking for a cheaper way out. If I bought a 16GB flash drive (like this one) instead of buying another external HDD would that work with no problems?

And last question: Which of the websites listed at the following link would be your preferred place to order Swap Magic from in the USA? Which is the most reputable.

I would appreciate for some of the more knowledgeable Afterdawn members and/or people who have actually done this before to give their professional insight on all this.

    Thank You,

    ~Chris

a flash drive is a flashdrive. you can even play ps3 games from a 16 gig usb stick. so that is all the same

afaik there is no way play backup ps2 games on a ps3 that is BC. there is no homebrew that lets you boot ps2 games like rogero manager. openps2loader is afaik only a ps2 application (i could be wrong). swap magic then is useless, since it cannot be used to boot into a backup hdd loader (like openps2loader). if there was such a loader, there would be something in the homebrew section of the hax network. nothing there, besides posts that it is not possible to play backup ps2 games on a ps3 with BC.

but, that said... isn't it just cheaper to buy a cheap ps2 console and use it for its purpose? to play ps2 (originals/backups).
so no luck there i think

It is possible to play PS2 backups on a PS3 using Swap Magic. Go to the links below and tell me what you think. It looks possible based on the info I dug up but I wanted to confirm it on this forum and see what other people thought (Just in case I've missed a few points).

And then my question would be, "Does this also work for PS1 games?" If not, it's no loss, I could just use an emulator on my PC which has been serving me well up to this point anyway.

Thank you very much for the tutorial.

I've been going through your website about the PS3 history and noticed that:

Does this emulator work as well as ePSXe does on the PC? Would you recommend using it? If there is no major difference in quality, then I might just consider installing that and running all my PS1 games that way.

Great work putting all that information together on your website. That must have been quite a bit of work.

No, it isn't a great Emulator, you would be better sticking with ePSXe and using your control pad on your computer.

Thanks for reading, it started of as a thread on PS3HaX and turned into a full website.
