hi, I have bought a DVD of the seven samurai(The Criterion Collection) a couple of months ago used, and decided i wanted to back it up. when I loaded it up with DVD shrink there was an 'unreferenced material' folder. upon checking the folder i have found that it is the restoration demonstration. this cannot be accested by conventions means when viewing the dvd. the only way I can see it is through dvd shrink. I have read that these copies are very rare and very special. tell me, do all copies have this? and if not is it worth more?

Thank You, I hope someone will give me an answer.

I've the Criterion #2 Seven Samurai as well and it has the same restoration piece that yours does. Also like yours I'm only able to view it through the preview window in Shrink. I just played around with it for half an hour and can't find any way to access it through normal menus.

After some googling I've found some interesting facts. The original run of the DVD did indeed contain the restoration clip but apparently after some legal issues it was removed for the second run.

Now this begs the question - did Criterion keep the restoration piece on the disc but remove access to it for the second run? Maybe this was a simpler change as opposed to removing the entire piece from the master? Who knows :)
