Hi guys, hope u can give me your two cents on this.

I bought a slim ps2 and thought of either using a modchip or hardrive, i have read i could use a USB harddrive with USBEXTREME.

But i read that people say that USBextreme or advance might not be worth the upgrade beacuse it has low compatibility with games.

Pls tell me if this is true and whats my best option, mod chip or harddrive?

Well getting the usb harddrive might be good after your ps2 laser died and you couldn't be stuffed installing a new one, mod chips just destroys your ps2 after about 2 years or so. I think getting swap magic would be a good alternative.

Modchips won't harm anything, unless they are installed incorrectly. I have fatty PS2 and a XBOX, both with chips and both well over two years old.

IMO, Swap Magic sucks. You need that retarded little slide card or those 'Magic Switches', so ideally I'd say get a chip and a HDD, so there will be no swapping, not having to use the mem. card with independence exploit everytime you wanna play a game.

Modchip are a pain to install, the first modchip i install in PS2 i end up breaking my Ps2, but my second one was successful. USB are low compabiblity, If u have a older slim V13, or maybe V12(laser problem PS2) u might be able to install something that let u use a regular IDE HDD. Swap Magic is a good if u dont have alot of cash, but u have a problem here and there, some game wont work, unless rebuild to fit and u will always have to swap the disk. Also multi disk games might be a problem(there are barely any of these)

have to go with ndtoall on this one. Personally i hate Swap Magic and would always go with a modchip. Just have it installed by a professional who knows what they are doing. Yes it will cost more but at least you know it is done right. I have had a chipped PS2 and Xbxo for a while now, no problems at all.

as far as the hard drive, USB just is not great. It does have some advantages but is not nearly as good as an internal.
It does not have as good a game compatibility, is no faster then using a disc either, and will not really save that much wear and tear on the laser since you need to load up USB Extreme to load every game anyway. But if you have a slimline that is not a V12 or V13 then it is your only option.

If by chance you do have a V12 or V13, then here is what you can do if you do not mind spending some money to have the best you can get.
    1. get this, http://www.hdcombo.com/cgi-bin/hdcombo/site.pl
    2. a compatible internal hard drive (Seagate or Maxtor are the easiest)
    3. then send it all to Teammodders.com. Have them install a DMS4 Pro chip or Crystal Chip 2.0, the hard drive, and put it all in the HD Combo case.

with that set up you have everything you need to run the hard drive, add and delete games from it, you will have better game compatibility then USB, save your laser life, and have faster loading times on games. The Crystal Chip may require you to download a program to load the hard drive games but i can assure you it would be a free download.

they are only for people in the USA and what it would cost i have no idea as they are friends and possibly gave me a discount because i am a moderator on the site. So you would have to ask them. But i would say you are looking at $200 and above for everything.
Not the cheapest mod for sure, but it will be the best.

    HD Combo is about $50-$65
    Chip is $55
Hard Dive $90 (unless you have one)
install and shipping would be the rest.
