    Iknow this might sound stupid but what is a external dvd burner ?

    It is a burner that is NOT inside the computer case--usually connected by USB port (plugged into computer)

    Outside the case as opposed to inside the case. The word external should have been a clue.

    Have any of you ever used these? If so do they work good? Better than the internal ones...

    They both work good. You need the newer USB 2 connection for the external though. External is usually more expensive for the same model drive. Both have their advantages. I prefer internal whenever possible on most components.
