Is there a single program where I can add subtitles to a movie without going through the hassle with multiple programs?

Then get ffdshow, and remember to look video configuration and enable subtitle support.
Or get VobSub and it will do the job.

When you have seen it and all is working, go to guides section and select way you like to convert avi to dvd-files and then just burn it to dvd.
I use ConvertXtoDVD... FilmMachine will do the job.
