Sony DW U55A Aloha everyone, I'm looking for guidance in trying to troubleshoot my friends Sony VAIO notebook's DVD burner. Please bear with me as I may not have all the pertinent information at my fingertips (since it's not my computer), but if you need more info, I will find it out quickly. Recently his DVD burner started failing burn attempts, using DVD-Shrink 3.2.0.15 and Nero 7. We couldn't get it to burn any DVD's at all using any of the Nero utilities. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the driver for both the burner, and the Secondary IDE channel it is listed under. I have also updated the firmware for the burner to the most recent version (2.5b I think). I've made sure DMA is enabled on the burner. I downloaded and used Sony's DriveCheck program to test the drive; it failed during the write portion of the test. I'm not sure where to go from here as I am reaching the bounds of my technical knowledge, and I would appreciate some pointing in the right direction, or any help you can give me. I saved a log file from a recent burn attempt, but I hesitate to post it as it is very long, and I don't want to annoy anyone. I will post it if requested. Aloha Smarvy Yep those Nero logs can be very log but good to post - has info that may help to sort this out. Just be sure to edit out the serial # - begins w/ 1A, 1C or 5C. Hmmm also failed during Sony'w write test. What reason/error did this test give? One thing could be the media you are using. Have you (they) tried a different brand? Good to use would be Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden or made in Japan Sony, Fuji or Maxell. Burn speed also - what burn? Might want to try taking it down a notch.
Aloha binkie, Thanks for the tip about the serial #. I will post the Nero Log after I answer your questions. Sony's Drive Check did not give a reason for the write check failing, it just said "Write Test Failed" We've tried Verbatim, TDK and Memorex media, same problems across the board. We've been burning at 8x mainly during these trials, but I did lower the speed to 4x for a couple of burns, but the problem still existed. Thanks for the help! Ok (sorry should have looked up the specs on the drive 1st) the Sony is an older drive - max burn speed of 4 for -R and 2.4x for +R. The last firmware update on this drive was from 2004 so newer media like the 16x speed in this log may give it problems. That's one thing that can cause the power calibration you got in this log. Not sure on what the max burn speed is on the other media you tried is but newer media may not be compatible with it. Look for 8x and under if you can find it. It might just be time to replace it or get an external burner to use with the laptop. Here's some other suggestions too: Nero API version: 7.0.0.0 Update Nero - the latest is 7.8.5.0. Quite a few fixes & enhancements since this version. Do a clean install - uninstall Nero - run the clean tool. Reboot. I'd also run a registry cleaner liek the free ccleaner. Use the issues and cleaner options. Now reinstall Nero. Physical memory : 510MB Free physical memory: 20MB Memory in use : 95 Quite a bit of memory in use. So no multitasking and close any unneeded programs. Do a disc defrag and virus scan too if you haven't recently.

Aloha, Well, after some discussion, my friend has made the decision that he is going to buy another burner, and doesn't want me to try and fix the one he has. Ah well...
